The fog lifts hope for the future

I was ill for a long time as I have said in previous blogs. I recently reconnected with an old friend who asked me, “When you were teaching me all of those years ago where you unwell?” “Well yes of course I was” I said. I asked her if I was any different and she said “Yes, I had a lot more energy”. A fibre myalgia client said to me that people just do not understand how ill one is with this illness. Fibre myalgia and M.E. are similar illnesses. “If you had a hand or arm missing people would see your pain and difficulty. Because the pain you feel is internal they can’t see it and so don’t understand the levels of physical pain you are coping with”, she said. This is very true and I would support that entirely.

There is a mental fog that is attached to this illness and the sufferers mental thinking is diminished for the duration of the illness. Some days it is worse than others of course. I found that the things that were so easy in the past were difficult on every level. Anything physical was hard and anything that required my mental capacity was also difficult as my brain just would not work properly.

I am a trained artist and designer and all of my life from my childhood I have used my creative capacity. When I was ill it was almost impossible for me to do anything creative. For about half a decade I did pretty much nothing but sleep. I could not paint, draw or design and it all felt lost to me. I read a lot during those times when I had a break in my illness. That reading took my on a new path. One that I had contemplated years earlier, but had set aside for my first love art.

My love of art started when I was a baby. My mother drew for me a cat. I must have been no more than eighteen months old as I know I was still being carried by her. I never forgot that day she drew the cat. There are times, days, circumstances, people and moments that touch us. They are the jewels of our life. Illness diminishes our capacity to engage fully with life. Both illness and life are experiences. My experience with illness has changed my life. That experience now helps me to connect to others who are going through the same or similar and help them on a road of recovery. For many people illness is a temporary inconvenience. For some it marks the end of their life and for others a road that has to be accepted and endured. Illness can be embraced, endured or fought. It is up to the individual and their circumstances what path is taken. There is no right or wrong way to emotionally deal with illness. The individual decides. I fought my way back to well health. I looked for those answers that would enable me to go home back to myself.

That road home challenged me on many levels. It took me from my own temporary resignation to my horrible situation to a deeper understanding of the human body, life, spirit, soul, and the forces of nature and the universe. Would I change anything? That is a difficult question to answer. I hated being ill and loosing every aspect of myself and self-respect. It is difficult to live with oneself, in illness. I looked in the mirror and I did not see Lynette for years. The strong feisty lady who rolls up her sleeves and gets on with it had gone. The struggle she endured during those ill years was immense on all levels, emotional, physical, mental and spiritual. It was a hard horrible time.

I came through it stronger, wiser, and clearer in my understanding of many aspects of life, more knowledgeable and more skilled. So my difficult time gave me something. It took something and gave me something else in return. So, would I change it? Probably not on balance, I think. I am still here with a somewhat different outlook on life. To be honest I am grateful to the universe for all it has given me over the past sixty years of my life. What is a little bit of fog between the universe and I?

The Soul and the Spirit

I read something said about Reiki recently. I read, “Reiki is said to be a spiritual practice. However it is more than that”.

That statement implies the description of “spiritual practice” does not express what Reiki is. It implies the idea of being a spiritual practice is in some way insignificant to other considerations of what that person thinks Reiki is. What they are basically saying I think, is that if we describe Reiki as a spiritual practice it does not tell us the true worth and ability of it.

Being a spiritual practice, is the very highest of what Reiki is. It does not make Reiki less in any way. We have to take a look at the word “Spiritual” and determine what that is. Recently someone said to me that they consider themselves to be Spiritual and not religious and I asked them, what is the difference? The person could not give me an answer because they had not thought about it thoroughly enough. It was a clever and fashionable statement but did not have substance for that person. They did not have an answer to my question.

To consider the word spiritual we perhaps to look at the word religious also and look at them side by side.

Let’s start with the word religion. I feel that many people today have a negative view of religion and use the idea of spirituality in its place so as not to be associated with any particular religion but showing some reverence to something greater. Maybe religious history is partly to blame. This negative view maybe in part due to all of that fighting back stabbing, killing, abuse and downright dishonestly that many religions have engaged in over time, that have caused so many of us to just not wish to even hear the word religion spoken. It could be said that which is meant to nurture the human soul and spirit have thrown dirty water on the task. So it is not surprising that many are left feeling cold at the very thought of the word religion. Religions main task is to throw light on the path to God; instead it too can be bogged down with earthly experience. Difficult indeed to heave one foot on the earth and on in heaven.

Now what do we mean by spiritual? To consider the word spiritual we first have to understand the word “Sprit.”  What is spirit? Often the word soul and spirit are used interchangeably to mean the same thing. They do not mean the same thing. Many people if not most people think of their body as who they are. “I am my body.” “My body must be beautiful because if my body is perfect and beautiful people will perceive a beautiful me.” Are we a sum total of our body or are we more than our body? The body becomes a mess in time because it ages, and so are we now not beautiful because our body may not be so?

To find the real beauty of a person you must look deeper. It is located inside of the person that is where the beauty lay. The beauty lay in their thoughts, ideas, actions, and personality. Those things allow the person to have interaction with the world on a deeper level. What are we to call those bits of the person as a collective expression? Are those things part of the mind or are they more than just mental thinking capacity of the person? The mind is a tool by which we make sense of information on an intellectual level. We analyse the world and life with the mind. We say we think thoughts and they happen in the brain which is the mind. The soul is not the mind it does not analyse at all it just is. We will come back to all of these words and ideas latter. So that leaves the word sprit and if spirit is not the soul what is it?

Let’s recap.

We have so far spoken about spiritual practice, we started with that and also religion and the differences in those two things. We have also spoken about the difference in the soul and the spirit. We further touched on the body and what is that and our ideas of the body and who we are. What a muddled mine field it all is. Please let me give you my take on this it may help you to make some sense of it all.

That defiantly is where the analytical processes of the person take place. We all think our thoughts in the brain. All information about our external life will be filtered by this part of us through the  senses. We make sense of what is around us via the senses and the brain. We analyse that information with the brain and then that information is stored somewhere in us. We think about what is coming at us via life and our senses and then store that information. We do not think consciously about every bit of information that comes at us form moment to moment as there is just too much of it for the brain to cope with. It thinks about some of it and analyses that which is new or different or previously unknown and unfamiliar. A lot of information that comes in our direction does not need the brain to analyse it as it is very familiar and  not consequential or threatening or different. It has been already stored and understood.

 

The Physical body

This needs little explanation, however it is not who we are. The body is not the person. ThinkstockPhotos-461277209The body houses the person and the person lays somewhere inside the body. I am not my body, but my body is the home that I inhabit. It allows me to move and live within the human experience on the earth. It is flesh and bone and it is easily damaged if I am not careful with it. I can work on my body to enhance its look and health. I need my body to live the human experience on the earth.

 

The soul

This part of the person is the person. The soul is who I am. I am my soul. The soul is my personality, it is my essence. I know that some of the person’s personality is governed by part of the brain. However the person is more than their brain functioning. They feel and when they feel they do not do so with their brain. It is at another part of their body that they go to for their feelings. It will be with their gut and the heart that they feel. Feelings painful and joyful go to these two places. This is where the person or the soul resides. The person resides in the gut mostly and in the heart also. The soul is the part of you that changes and develops over time. You are not the same person that you were ten years ago or even five years ago. In that time span you have had many experiences and those experiences good or bad happy or sad difficult or easy have moulded you into the human being you are today. It has given you your take on life. It has shaped your understanding of the world and what it can be to you and others. I am a therapist and very often it is this part of a person that is in the most distress when they come to me for help. I have to repair their soul, before the body will heal. Very often it is a case of sort the soul out and the body will sort itself out. This part of the person connects to all life on all levels and so it gets the biggest distress sometimes as it negotiates life.

 

The spirit

Now what is the spirit? If the brain governs the analytical process of the person and the soul is the person, what is the spirit?

The spirit does not do the same as the soul. It does not feel at all. It is dispassionate. The spirit of the person stands back and watches. The spirit part of the person is the observer. What does it observe? It observes you the person. It observes how you negotiate life. It takes note of everything and records everything about you and what you do. It is like a note book or a USB stick recording as you go. There is nothing that you ever do that you truly forget. It is all housed somewhere and this is where it is housed. We think that our memories come from our brain. In part they may, however it is in the spirit that everything about  you is stored. The spirit is like a filling cabinet and the brain retrieves the files from the cabinet. The spirit half of the soul records. The soul and the spirit of the person sit side by side within the person.

The spirit of the person is the part of the person that is pure energy. It is the part of your being that comes directly from the source of life itself. It is the part of you that on your demise will go back to the source of life. The spirit does not interact with life as the soul does. The soul is the messy part of you feeling everything and reacting to it all. The spirit just takes note of how the soul handles life. It is dispassionate.

These two jobs need to be separated. The soul very often is a mess feeling and reacting to everything that comes its way. There needs to be a part of you that stands back and is dispassionate to keep record of how you got in the mess in the first place. Your history needs to be housed somewhere. It is in the spirt that your history is housed. When you are done with life on the earth and the human experience your spirit hands over the spirit USB stick, if you will, to the source of life and your whole life is recorded in the universe for the source of life to use as information on life. Nothing is lost from the universe life takes note of everything and it is continually adapting to information. We know that life changes from generation to generation and there is development of all species that takes place within life. The universe keeps all information safe and uses it for the development of the universe and life. The spirit goes back to the universe or God. The spirit goes back to the source of all life and hands over its information to the source of life.

 

Oneness

ThinkstockPhotos-177794827In every mystical or religious path we are told we need to recognise our oneness with God. What is that for heaven’s sake? Oneness with God! Many people don’t recognise God and so go into great debate about that. God is a word used to describe the source of all life. God is all powerful and the ultimate force of nature. It is the thing that brought all life and the universe into being. It is the universe. That force is given a human face by Christianity and in other religious paths it is given other faces, as an energy force, gods, or a god of some kind. All paths put that force above everything else and say all sprang from that force.

Now there is a clue in those words “All sprang form that great force”.

So if all sprang from this great force which some call God, that means you and I did and all things did. Mystical and religious paths say all is one and has oneness. All come from one to make many.

We can use the word “spirit” to mean essence of a thing. We are all from the main essence. We could say that the spirit and the main essence being one and the same. So the spirit can be said to be that bit of you and me and all things that came from the great source of life. It is the “God spark”. It is the bit of you and me and all things that come from the main ingredient of life. We can think of God in many ways but its essence is the source of all things. So now we can see the difference between the words soul and spirit. This is why these four words, the mind, the body, the soul and the spirit  are so important to us. They describe very different aspects of the human living condition that are of great importance to the human living experience.

 

Spirituality

So now what of spirituality and a spiritual path? Well spirituality is the path that nourishes both the soul and the spirit. How can we do that? How is that done if it is done at all? If it is done will be dependent on what the person has decided for themselves. Do I ignore the whole idea of the spiritual and just exist?

Do I live the earthly life to the full and experience all that has to offer to the exclusion of nurturing the spirit? In that experience I feed the soul aheavy diet.dv787002 I may well enjoy my self for many years but at the end of it some thing may well suffer.

Do I balance my experience by nurturing both soul and spirit? Walk a religious path alongside the earthly experience. So I can have an affair or two, drink loads of alcohol, take substances that are not good for me perhaps, travel the world and have a great time, then think about the spirit from time to time as is needed. I might think about it at my religious holidays and festivals, and at whatever ways and times that connects me to the “God source.”

Do I immerse myself in the spiritual path and just live my life exclusively nurturing my God spark, feeding the spirit with the best that living can give it? Do I then pass those learnings onto others and illuminate their path to the best spiritual nurturing they can have?

Do I sit back and analyse it all using my brain to assess the validity or futility of all of these paths?

As you can see there are many paths and each path has its own merit. No path is better or worse than the other. Each path has its merits as each path will bring something positive to the person. Each path brings experience through the living experience to the person. All paths are a road back home to the ultimate force. We all return to dust or at least our body does and our soul and spirit go home. The ultimate power of the universe, that which some call God wants back that which it gave us, that piece of itself called the spirit. A spiritual path is one that nurtures that part of us. God is the ultimate energy force that houses the best in us or the light side of us. Not the dark side of the human nature. If we follow a spiritual path we wish to enhance the best side of us. That bit that is nearest to the universal perfection that we have.

Life itself is the ultimate spiritual journey. Life takes us from the universal source of life and then sends us back to it. We are on a journey of return from the moment we are born. We are thrust into life and we are given people who are our parents and wider family and we accept that situation and get on with what comes our way from that experience. We then are trust even more into the living experience and made to learn many things and are schooled by our social systems in one way or another. We start our development of the soul from the moment we are born. The situation to which we are born into starts that development for us. We are on our spiritual journey. We are working our way back home already. To be on spiritual journey you do not have to be religious or non-religious you just have to be living. Living is the ultimate spiritual journey. It is the return home for all of us with a lot of hassles and joys thrown in to make it interesting and stretching.

A spiritual journey is not about being good or bad. It is not about being the light or dark it is about a return home. How we choose to return home and with what kind of information on our spirit USB stick is our choice. The source of life gets to look it over and it will be happy or sad at the information stored on that spirt USB. The source of life needs you to experience life and no two lives are ever the same. We are all different people having our own personal human experience. There are rules to life, for life would be chaos without rules, and so the source gives some rules for us to follow. However, if we choose to follow those rules or not is up to us as above all we must experience. At the end of life we get to make our case for the life we lived. We are all on a journey of the spirt no matter what. The path we take and if we take a spiritual path on that journey is up to us. Free will and choice is at the heart of the universal desire for you. You get to choose many things each and every day.

 

Religion

Religion sheds light on the way back home. It highlights the rules to that return, or at least that is what it is supposed to do. It is there to remind us that there is a home and we are not here forever just a time and then we return home. The universe is home and the universe is what we return to. All religions give their personal explanation on how the universe is organised. It does not matter what religion you choose or if you choose none at all. You will return home one day and you will have lived a life long or short good or bad. You will return home with experience and development of your soul.

Religion or no religion a spiritual path or not is up to you and always should be your choice. So what bit of you do you most wish to nourish? Is it the soul, the spirit, the mind, or the body? We all get to choose our focus.

 

Reiki

Reiki treatmentNow let us finally go back to the very beginning of this blog and discuss Reiki. We have now come full circle. A spiritual path nurtures the spirit and spirituality is the practice of nurturing the spirit and  the soul. Living itself could be said to be the ultimate spiritual journey as it nourishes both the soul and the spirit to some capacity. Reiki is a spiritual practice and so it nurtures the spirit of the person. It enhances the practitioner’s spirit, because they connect to the source of the spirit. That is where the energy of life comes from and it is that energy that the practitioner connects too. It is that energy that the person both the practitioner and the patient or client engages with. That energy feeds the person on all levels. It feeds the body, the soul, the mind, the emotions and the spirit of the person. It enhances the person on all levels of their being. That is why it is a spiritual practice and that is why it is the very best it can be, and to be a spiritual practice does not make it less than but more than. Reiki is very effective and this is its effectiveness. Reiki connects to the source of life and it connects the person to that source, both practitioner and patient also. Reiki draws energy from that source.

We all get to choose both our focus and our path in life. We all get to choose many things each day. We get to choose if we bother to think about things and analyse things or not. All aspects of the person are important as is the method of feeding and nourishing each aspect that we choose. Each choice is a road ahead and a way forward, a method of engaging with life itself. Each choice we make is an opportunity to enhance the many aspects of ourselves.

What will you choose today? You have at the heart of your being free will and choice to do as you please.

Illness is hard work

Illness is no easy task. Most people will be ill at some time in their life. Illness is a part of the living condition. Our bodies are wonderful things they will keep us well for the most part as long as we give them the conditions to do so. When we become ill it can be a tough road. Illness can highlight the shortcomings of ourselves, life, situations and people around us.

We would all like to think that when we become ill there will be good friends and family around to support us in our time of need. This is not always the case for many people. Even if we do have good people around us they may not have the skill ability or time to give us all that we may need to make us feel supported. This lack of support whether it is real or felt can be an added burden and stress to the person who is ill in a time of need.

Support

Many people become ill and do not have the necessary emotional and practical support around them. This will be detrimental to recovery as it will be an additional burden on the body with added stress and will not aid recovery. I remember how unsupported I felt when I was ill. I had family around me my husband and son, but my son was in his teens and struggling with his own issues as teenagers do. My husband did the best he could to hold the fort, he worked and did long hours traveling to London from our home each day. He was up early and home late and then there was a teen age son, a house, and a wife that was unwell to support. He did not have much energy left for himself. They were our difficult times as a family.

So I really can empathise with anyone who is in this situation. I felt cut off, alone and lonely much of my time in those days. I struggled with my illness and tried to do my best for my family. My illness was one of depleted energy and pain, I had M.E. Obviously any added burden to an illness will not be good for the person in the long run. Stress can be detrimental to health and so to add stress will not be good for the recovery of the person.

Laughter

Laughter is a good tonic for people who are unwell. It is a good tonic for the well and unwell alike. It raises the vibration of the person and this helps to promote well health. We all have a vibration to our body. Everything has a vibration.  When our body is well it vibrates at well and positive, and when we are unwell it vibrates unwell or negatively. We can change this vibration or encourage it to change in many ways. Laughter helps to do this. Think of people who are unwell and think about how they feel. Now bring to mind the thought of people who are well and full of energy and think about how they feel. The unwell and the well feel different to be around. People who are unwell tend to sap energy and can make you feel depleted and the well and vibrant person does the opposite. They help to energise you.

Chi/ Ki energy

As a Reiki master I know that when people are unwell they seek to be exposed to chi energy. We know in the core of our being that this energy is health giving. Chi/Ki energy is electro-magnetic energy that occurs naturally in the body. Energy probationers use this energy to good effect in healing many health conditions of the body. Find yourself a good energy practitioner. We can impact our vibration by energetic healing such as Reiki, cranial sacral therapy, hypnotherapy, and acupuncture to name a few. All of these forms of healing will or can change the vibration of the person to the well vibration or well state depending on the knowledge and effectiveness of the practitioner involved. Obviously there is an element of skill and knowledge to the use of these therapies.

In the Company of others

Being around others who are well and in cheerful disposition will help the person who is unwell. These people vibrate at the well vibration and happiness can be transferred. We have all been around happy people and sad people at some time. Or we have been around positive people and negative people. All sorts of personalities and people cross our paths in life. Each personality and disposition will have an influence on our own. If we are around people who  are sad or negative this will reduce our own vibration as we start to be effected by them and start to mirror their vibration, or what they are radiating. I am sure many of you have walked into a gathering of people and their mood was very up and cheerful and immediately it raised your feeling of wellbeing. We all like parties or gatherings that are going with a swing or good vibration. Equally we may have walked into a gathering of people and just felt the energy of the room flat or negative. Something was going on but we did not necessarily know what but just felt it. None of us like being in or part of negative or flat gatherings. They make us feel flat or negative and serve to lower our mood or vibration.

Self- help

  1. If you are unwell, try your best to keep your spirits/vibration up. This will be beneficial to you in the long run. It will add a positive vibration and therefore you will not add any further negativity to the body at a time when it has enough of it to deal with.
  2. Be amongst cheerful positive people they will raise your vibration and this will be of help to you.
  3. Consider energy healing. This is the part of healing that modern medicine does not deal with. Energy healing adds to the body a vital health giving ingredient which speeds up healing in the sick and unwell.

Caring for the unwell

If you are looking after a person who is ill or you have ill people to deal with try to keep their vibration/mood high this will aid and speed up their recovery. It may lighten your load also.

If you know someone who is ill and isolated try to be kind and help in whatever way you personally can. Sometimes a bunch of flowers, putting their dustbins out or a smile and a wave will lighten their load and raise their vibration. One day it may be you that needs your vibration supported by others. We don’t know if one day it may be ourselves that needs help and support with illness.

Stay healthy, stay happy, be supportive to the unwell.

Holistic Therapy

Chiropractic therapy works with the alignment of the bones which can become misaligned simply through the process of living.  If these misalignments are left untreated they can lead to muscle imbalance, poor posture, pain and the stagnation or pooling of energy in muscles throughout the body.

The working life of a holistic therapist is not always easy. I had a client last year who came to me because they said I only practiced Reiki. I did not tell this client that was not true until they visited me. They were disappointed in me and promptly removed themselves from my care. I am not sure what benefit they saw in me only knowing one discipline. I have equally heard such stories from my fellow therapists.  Most therapists know and practice more than one therapy. It is not a case of learning one and specialising. Of course there are therapists who only have one therapy, but that is not the norm by far. Take a look at therapist websites and you will see that many practise many disciplines.

I can equally understand why the public may see this as a therapist being a jack of all trades. However this is far from the truth. It is easy to understand why many holistic therapists decide to learn more than one therapy.

As a therapist myself that has qualified in more than one therapy, I would be a little apprehensive to visit a therapist who just had one therapy under their belt. Although I am not saying I would not visit such a person. It depends on the therapy and the therapists’ reputation for results.

 

CPD, Continuing professional development

Therapist are required as part of the regulations for belonging to many professional bodies, to do ongoing professional development, each year. Sometimes this can be tricky to fulfil I can tell you. A very easy way to fulfil the requirements is to undergo further training by way of workshops or in other therapies. Often training in another holistic therapy will fulfil the requirement for a few years. Extending the existing holistic knowledge of the therapist is seen as a positive thing and not a negative thing to do. All knowledge has to be good as it broadens the awareness and understanding that the therapist may have of how the body works and how they can impact the health of their client in a positive manner.

 

 

Workshops

Workshops help to extend the therapists knowledge by way of short weekend or day courses. I find these very valuable as they often give me a taste of other therapies and energy knowledge. I am a colour therapist and I tend to use colour therapy in a very supportive way to my other therapies. I never use colour therapy as a main therapy for my clients. Recently, I went on a weekend workshop that was focusing on colour and sound. Sound is another of my therapies. We were given finger lights to use to illustrate the impact of coloured light on the body. Finger lights are little lights that young people use at raves and parties to shine light into a darkened dance floor. They are meant as fun little gismos. We used them to shine light on the back of each other in the workshop and the person had to say where the light was being shone. Not one person got it wrong even though they could not see where the light was being shone. This experience made me revisit something that I know well; the impact that coloured light has on the body and colour in general. I needed this little exercise to remind me of this fact and how I can use this exercise and piece of knowledge for my own students and clients.

 

Client’s affinity

Some clients will have an affinity with one therapy over another purely on emotional grounds. I can get the work that I need done for the client by switching my approach using one therapy over another. Each individual is different and will come from a personal emotional stand point. If they have had a negative experience with one therapy very often they will not try it again, even though it they may be experiencing the therapy via a different therapist. This has to be respected and it is impossible for any therapist to insist that a client has any therapy. So how can they help if a particular therapy is not suiting a client? Having knowledge of more than one therapy makes a great deal of sense for both the client and the therapist.

 

 

Using multiple therapies

Each therapy brings its own impact on the condition of the body and person, and using each therapy in conjunction with another can sometimes have a greater impact. Sometimes if a client is particularly highly strung or stressed I will give them one or two Reiki sessions prior to giving Hypnotherapy sessions as that helps me work much more easily with that person and they have to learn to do less work at relaxing. The Reiki brings them into a naturally relaxed state that goes far beyond the session itself.

Colour has an impact on our emotions, physical and mental health. It can make you cheerful and uplifted or down and sad, depending on the colour and your response to that colour.

If a person is very emotional I can tell them how to use colour in their dress, décor and generally around them to combat that stress quickly. These are very simple things and highly effective. Colour and light impact our being on all levels. We have physical, emotional and spiritual responses to colour and light.

I consider the therapies that I know as part of my tool kit bag. Just as a builder or carpenter has a correct tool for a particular job in their tool bag, so have I. All of the therapies that I use are part of my therapy tool kit. I do not offer one therapy over another to a client just as an experience for money. I want results for my client and my tools bring those results and that is the point.

 

Deepening knowledge

There are seven major chakra points. Each is an energy reservoir that sends electromagnetic energy around the body. Electro magnetic energy is also known as Chi/Ki and Prana amongst other names. This subtle energy needs to be in a healthy condition to keep all levels of the person in good health. Alcohol, poor sleep patterns and stress are some of the things that will interrupt the subtle energy system of the body.

This subtle energy needs to be in a healthy condition to keep all levels of the person in good health. Alcohol, poor sleep patterns and stress are some of the things that will interrupt the subtle energy system of the body.

As my knowledge of energy has deepened over the years learning each of my therapies, I have come to understand that each therapy is just a different approach to impacting the client’s energy system or body. Sometimes one therapy will not do the work that I require effectively enough for that particular client and so I can call on the other therapies and energy knowledge that I possess. I do not see this as a negative state of affairs but of infinite benefit to my client’s wellbeing and management.

Each therapy I have learnt over the years gives me another way of bringing healing to my clients; all have deepened my knowledge of how the body works both energetically and physically. I have learnt how energy impacts the energy system and the body to good effect. I know that if I needed the help of a holistic therapist I would look for one that has a good reputation of gaining healing results and not one who necessarily specialises in one therapy.  Broad and deep knowledge makes sense to me.

Diagnosis M.E.

When I was diagnosed with M.E. it was a welcome relief. To be honest, even though I had heard the term M.E., I did not know much about the illness. I had heard in the 1980’s that young successful people would go down with the illness due to overwork.

I had a bacterial infection that almost killed me as it had made me very unwell. The doctors could not sort the bacterial infection out easily and on closer inspection on my overall health they came to a diagnosis of M.E.  When I received the diagnosis of M.E., I had no understanding of what that illness would mean to my life in the coming years ahead.  I suffered a great deal under the umbrella of that horrible illness. There were days of pain, where every bone and muscle in my body hurt. My body just did not work anymore. Something had been switched off and I just could not switch it back on. My energy levels did not exist anymore and I felt constantly sick and ill. If I ate I felt ill and if I did not I felt just as unwell. However I felt constantly hungry and I just never knew what to do to make myself feel comfortable. This went on for many years day after day.

No hope

The trouble with M.E. in those days was the illness was not understood and there was no medical cure or way forward with the illness. It is much the same today also. The medical profession do not know what to do to treat the illness, or how to cure it.  Doctors know what a horrible illness this is but the public by and large did not then and still do not understand what this illness means to the sufferer, by and large.  Although it is getting a little better as many people now  know a friend acquaintance or family member who has suffered with M.E.  I am sad to say that not much has changed over the years and there is little hope for the sufferer.

No help available

The medical profession did not give me any help with my illness as there was none to be given. I am sure if there had been something available I may well have been offered it. Nothing was ever offered to me as a help to my situation.

I remember going to the doctors many times over the years feeling very weak, ill and helpless and knowing that my symptoms were a result of my illness and there would be nothing that they could offer by way of help.  I went to see them anyway. I am not sure why. Maybe it was because as a symptom of my M.E. I would get infections almost weekly and have to have antibiotics all of the time. I hated having to go to the doctor and I hated the antibiotics even more.  That is just ridiculous I know, but it was about the emotional struggle of the whole situation and not the doctor or the medicine that I really hated.

There are so many illnesses that cannot be helped or cured. We think often of doctors as magicians that will wave a magic wand and make us better.  Very often that is indeed the case, but not always so.  They do the best they can within their circumstances and that which is available to them. That does not always help when we feel very ill.

In the end I gave into my illness as that is all I could do at the time. However in time I decided  I just would not give a moment more of my time to this horrible illness and I looked for a solution. I found my solution. Mine was in rest and Reiki. It helped me get my health back and my life back on track.

Holistic Support

Holistic therapies are being taken much more seriously by the medical profession as they are coming to understand the emotional support as well as the therapeutic and healing help that they can offer the patient alongside their own conventional treatments.

A colleague of mine said recently, that a doctor had said, they did not refer their patients for holistic therapy because that made them feel as if they had failed. Well my response to that is this: If you have given your best to your patient how can you have failed them? Therapists are duty bound to refer their clients to their GP if it is a condition that is outside the scope of their therapy. They have to give treatments that are supportive of any treatment the G P is giving.

Holistic benefit

At the end of the day it is the patient/client’s health and well-being that is the most important factor and not the pride of the therapist or the doctor in question. I did not have any such complaint with my doctors. I did not feel they failed me at all. They did not offer me holistic therapy. I have no idea on their policy with such practice.

I have a client who I helped last year. She came to me with an illness her doctor could not help with and within six weeks I had improved her illness so much so that she hardly suffers with it at all now. She can get on with her life and has just a very slight relapse from time to time. In time I feel that may well go as well.

Holistic therapy can offer a great deal of benefit to many conditions and many people. My client said to me that when I was suggested to her, she wondered what I could do that the doctors had not done or could not do. Well holistic therapies approach health from a different stand point. We look at the energy condition of the body and not the body as a machine. It is not better or worse than what the medical profession does it is just a different way at coming at the problem, and sometimes that is what is needed in some conditions.

Reiki made me better

My doctors were very patient with my illness but could not help me. I thank them for their time and patience as that helped me emotionally, and that emotional help was something of a support to me. However, Reiki made me better.

The My Story series continues with number three in the series, “Miss Stress Ball”.

 

I was a very quiet shy child. Life taught me to keep my mouth shut and keep a low profile. I was born in a time when you did not answer your elders and betters back. If you had an opinion you were to keep it to yourself as no one wanted to hear it from a child or teenager. That did not suit me as I was always a deeply thinking person.

Teachers

I am of mixed race and was born in the 50’s in London, Great Britain. Being mixed race was not an easy thing at that time. At school many of my teachers left me in no doubt that they did not want me in their class on the basis of my colour. Not all teachers where like that, I did have many kinds and lovely people who were my teachers and mentors along the way. However, the first teacher that made it clear to me that I was not wanted as a pupil by her was when I was five and first entered school. She made me cry most days until my mother had enough and went to the school and gave her what for. I remember hearing my mother say to the teacher if my daughter comes home one more day crying because of you, then you will go home crying. My mother was a tough woman.

Unkindness

Some of the children were unkind also and most would not play with me and did not include me. The boy next door threw a stone at me as I passed his house one day on the basis of my colour and called me all sorts of unkind names. The children who played in my street one day would not let me join in their game and said I t was because I was dirty. When I looked at my dress and hands, I showed the children and said no look I am clean. They replied with you are black and not white and you are dirty.

My Stresses

These were my personal early stresses in life. Times have got somewhat better with such things. Many people do try hard to be tolerant to all races now. Not everyone has this inclusive mind set even today. Life can be hard and cause us all sorts of stresses. Many of those stresses can start very early in our lives. As a hypnotherapist I know that most people when they come to me for help have had some sort of trauma/traumas at some point in their life. Stress always has a root.

I continued to gather stress as I went through life and as life dealt me many difficult situations to deal with. I had good ones too, but stress builds up in the body as negative energy and has to be removed. The body will accommodate an amount of it but when the sub-conscious mind and body becomes over loaded the person will break down in some way. It could be physical, emotional or even mental.

A Broken Body

My body broke down eventually and I fell into ill health, with M.E. The signs of stress were there in my life in my thirties and my friends joked and called me miss stress ball. I was a person who just would not give in to life and would just fight through the worst of it.

Everyone has a story and reasons why they become stressed. Life is stressful for all sorts of reasons. Stress must be dealt with and we all need to be mindful that we are impactful on each other in the things we do and say to each other. Why add stress to another person’s life. Life itself gives each of us enough of it.

Dealing with stress

I have dealt with my stress and ill health and the two things that help me the most are meditation and Reiki. I use both of those things to keep my stress in check. My Illness had Its Roots In The Past

Often, I’m reminded that life is a funny old thing. It has the capacity to bring us a variety of different experiences – some positive, some negative and some a curious mixture of both. Experience is a good thing but it’s important to understand how the past can impact the present and what you can do about it.

 

On  Holiday Pain and Strain

At this moment, I am sitting in Madera outside the Café do Teatro enjoying the sun, the music and people around me. My husband is sipping beer and generally enjoying life. It has been an up and down sort of day. I awoke this morning with physical pain having strained my back a few days ago taking a sled ride down a mountain. It was good fun albeit a bit scary in places, but as we turned this way and that I felt my tummy muscles strain. It only took me bending over the bath to make the problem a lot worse.

Terrible Sun Burn

My husband is suffering from severe (ish) sunburn to his face’s face.  All his own fault, in fact. He had refused to wear sun block or a hat, insisting  he was going to be brown for his return to work.  I warned him this was plain insanity, and now he is in pain and as red as a lobster. My husband’s sun burn was the result of macho stupidity, but to be sure we both had a hand in our own pain.

Just as my husband’s terrible sunburn was brought about by his own actions, I would say the same about my M. E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis). At an earlier stage in my life, I was merely reacting to daily opportunities and challenges, without understanding that I was sowing the seeds of my poor health.

Doctors Don’t Know

Doctors don’t know what causes M.E. – some think it has something to do with viral infection. I did have a viral infection before my M.E. but more importantly, I think I ran myself down. I was depleted and low in energy. I worked too hard and did not sleep correctly. I was terribly stressed took things to heart, allowing it to affect my health and wellbeing.

Too Emotional

We all feel emotions acutely from time to time and that is normal. It’s not that I felt emotions acutely that caused my pain and illness, it’s is that I allowed trauma and unhappiness, though my ignorance of the situation, to stay and build within my body.

This is what I believed caused me to become ill with my viral infection.  I don’t know  whether the viral infection had anything to do with my M.E. and neither do the doctors, but being low and depleted of energy and vitality certainly did.  So my illness was a result of what I did. It was to do with my interaction with life.

Difficult Moments

Life has its difficult moments for us all. It is in those difficult times that we may gain some trauma to our person. Of course, traumatic circumstances should be avoided altogether, if that is not possible, the trauma that is gained through these difficult times needs to be dealt with and removed.

I did not deal with mine. I was like I was like so many people who just do not understand the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual severity of not dealing with the trauma that life’s stresses bring.

There’s Hope.

There is hope and there is recovery from trauma. The person needs to know what help they need and the correct method of rectification. For me, this came in the form of Reiki. It was a long road to recovery and not least because most people with M.E. do not make a full recovery at all. Some even die from the illness, or commit suicide. It is a hard life living with M.E. and I have to say I had my moments of wanting to end it all. Trouble was I was too weak, ill, and foggy brained to think about it seriously.

Recovery

My recovery started with acupuncture and ended with Reiki.  Reiki is the therapy that made the most difference to my health and made me well. Today I am a Reiki master and try to help others by teaching Reiki and giving Reiki treatments.  Reiki is a Japanese energy healing therapy and works by transference of universal energy (subtle energy).  There is recovery from the illness, I know because I made that recovery.

Introduction

 Reiki is the name given to a healing technique devised by a man named Dr. Mikao Usui and was spread to the west in 1930s by a Japanese Hawaiian lady called Mrs Takata. The word Reiki itself means “Universal Life Force Energy” (from the Japanese Rei meaning “Universal” and Ki meaning “Life Force Energy.”  Ki is also known as Chi in Chinese and Prana in Sanskrit.  Ki surrounds and animates all life and is the main source of our thoughts, emotions and spiritual existence. Ki is the subtle energy that can be accumulated by the body and guided by the will.

 Reiki is a hands-on or hands-off the body healing system that is very simple to use once the person has been attuned to the Reiki healing energy. Reiki energy can cause no harm since its existence is within us and the energy will always seek to heal and to balance the body. Reiki healing can be used by anyone attuned to the Reiki Energy and can be used to help bring healing to all living animal life. A practitioner has gone through a series of attunements that allows him/ her to heal using Reiki.  Once a person is attuned to Reiki energy they can bring healing to themselves, others and all animals.

 It is believed by Reiki healers that within the body there are energy pathways, and where many of these cross they form what are known as Chakras. The free flow of energy through the chakras are said to allow the body to be in good health.

 It is thought by Reiki practitioners that the Reiki energy nourishes cells and organs helping them to perform their functions optimally. It is also thought that when Ki energy is unable to flow with ease or is blocked, the person may suffer from disease or illness. Reiki is said to flow to the location of the blockage and will then clear the pathway so that the energy can run freely with ease once again, allowing the body to function properly.

 Reiki is said always to assist the body’s natural ability to heal itself.  Reiki energy is thought to be drawn by the person receiving the treatment and not given by the Reiki Practitioner. Reiki is said to have its own intelligence and it is never left entirely to the Practitioner to decide where the energy is needed. The energy will flow where the patient needs the energy as the energy will always seek to restore balance and harmony to the body.

 The practitioner can choose the length of time given to an area treated or to the placement of the hands during the treatment or to the length of time given to the entire treatment but that is the extent of the practitioner’s involvement in the directing of the energy.

 Reiki is now used in major hospitals throughout Great Britain, and in hospitals in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, as well as a growing community of private practitioners throughout the world.  Further information about Reiki can be found at The Reiki Council and The Reiki UK Association.

 My Session

 I have known Lynette Avis for many years and we are co-authors of Nourish the Flame Within- a guide to connecting to the human soul for Reiki, Martial Arts and Life.  Lynette has had a Reiki practice for many years in Suffolk, UK, as part of The Living Energy.

 When I arrived at the therapy rooms, I was led through the reception area into the treatment room, where we sat down and discussed Reiki and how it works.  There was soft music playing and the warm colours of the walls and the beautiful pictures made for a very relaxing ambience.  Lynette asked me to fill out a questionnaire, asking questions about general health, medication and habits.  She asked me whether I was happy for her to do the healing session with hands on the body or whether I preferred her to do the session with hands off the body.  Before I got on the couch, Lynette asked me to take my shoes and socks off.  Once on the coach, fully clothed and covered by a blanket, I closed my eyes and waited for the magic to start!

 I have never had a Reiki session before.  I was surprised by what I felt. Little actually happened.  I felt  subtle sensations of flowing energy that ran along my body like running water and on some areas of my body I felt some warmth and sometimes heat, but more often than not I felt the relaxing effects of stillness, quiet and soft music, rare pleasure in my hectic life. 

 I was asked to lie on my back to begin the treatment.  Lynette explained the procedure and the order that she would treat the body. She begun the treatment at my face and moved her hands over my face, then to the side of my face on my temples.  She proceeded under the back of my head, then down to my throat, heart, solar plexus, stomach area, hips, knees and feet.  When she finished treating my feet she asked me to roll over, onto my stomach. She then treated my back, starting at my shoulders, proceeding to my shoulder blades, small of the back and base of the spine.  Lynette held each position for about 3 minutes.

 The areas of warmth I felt on my body were on my right shoulder blade, a place where I often get muscle pain and on the left side of my stomach area where I sometimes experience discomfort and can be tender to the touch. Lynette explained that the warmth relates to my body drawing the Reiki Energy from her hands and using it to help heal itself.  She explained that the energy can sometimes be felt as cold, it depends on the person and the way in which the patient responds to the healing.

 Reflection

 As with all the therapies I have experienced so far in researching of this blog series, I found the Reiki session very relaxing and enjoyable,. I have learnt on this exploration of therapies that the body draws what it needs to heal itself.  In light of this Reiki healing session I have become aware of areas of my body that require my attention for healing and maintaining health. The Reiki energy highlighted and brought those areas to my attention.

 In response, I have begun to do one of the health meditations in Nourish the Flame Within more regularly than usual.  By understanding that disease can often be a slow progression from wellness to illness, Reiki can be a way of self monitoring your health and being able to make small, regular efforts to maintaining well- being.  The particular meditation from Nourish the Flame works in a similar way.  It also helps me to become aware of where imbalances are in my body and gives me the means to do something about it. The meditation that I use is called “Relaxation Meditation” and can be found in the health section of Nourish the Flame Within.

 The ease with which the Reiki session is given, it makes a lot of sense that some nurses are being trained and are choosing to be trained in using Reiki to complement their daily practice in hospitals throughout the world.  If just being attuned to Reiki can offer potential healing at no risk to the patient, it makes good sense to be able to use such a subtle healing art.  Once attuned to Reiki all that is required to heal is an intention to heal.  After all, healing is one of the main focuses of nurses.  During my conversations with complementary health practitioners, many of them have said that they have trained in Reiki as well as their other healing arts.

 You can learn the first stage of the Reiki attunement process which is known as Reiki 1, and use Reiki on yourself, friends and family to maintain your health on a regular basis.  Lynette has told me that she does this every day herself.  You can take your Reiki development further onto the next three levels of Reiki training enabling you to heal others on a professional basis and to teach.

Illness Why Me?

Illness Arrives
Illness is a funny old thing. It arrives on our doorstep one day and it seems often to have come out of know where. Illness happened to me like that. I was vacuuming the house one day and I had the most horrible pain at the back of my head. It made me stop what I was doing momentarily. I did worry for a moment but then let the thought go. I thought to myself that either this was nothing or it was the pre curser to some horrible illness. I had always enjoyed good health and so why would that change? I was thirty six and with life ahead of me and full of ideas for my future. Ill health was not on my agenda. When is it ever for anyone?

Some weeks later, I started to feel some pain in the right side of my face. I did not know what it was I just knew that I was in a great deal of pain. I went to my doctor prescribed anti-biotics and de-contestants. I did not know then that this was the very beginning of one of the worst periods of my life. Often when people become ill this is the truth. Their lives, as mine did, take a huge turn for the worst.

Unwelcome Inconvenience
Illness presenting itself in our lives is always unwelcome and a huge inconvenience. We often think of the beginning of our illness starting the moment we felt ill. However this is seldom the truth. The truth is more likely to be that the illness started years before. Its roots will have been in the past. It will have quietly entered your life and your body and the energy will not have necessarily been noticed by you.

Illness is a slippery customer. It seldom enters with bells and whistles to alert you to its presence. It enters quietly and then gets to work on you. It works its way into your life and body. In fact, the beliefs we hold about ourselves and the world around us are entwined with our life and our body. There is no way to separate them. When we become ill most of us become the victim. We say why me? What did I do to deserve this?

I Caused my own Illness
Sometimes the answer is plenty. For illnesses such as M.E. which I suffered from for many years, I can say that I did plenty to deserve all that my body put me through, although I did not know it at that moment and would find out the truth of this many years later. If someone had told me then that I had brought this illness on myself and it was my own fault I would not have believed them. Because as far as I knew about ill health it just happened, with no rhyme nor reason to who it struck down.

It certainly struck me down for it took me many years to recover my health. This was the beginning of a miserable time that was to last more than a decade and took me to places within myself that I did not know existed.

Worry and Burnt Candle
I had burnt my candle at both ends and I worried myself into the ground. That is a sure way to health disaster. This time led me on a journey and one that led me to learn lots of things about maintaining good health. If only I had known then all that I now know with regards to maintaining health. I could have avoided many years of horrible health and pain. Well we live and learn. I sure did.

This horrible health experience led me to write Nourish the Flame Within, in the hope that others will not suffer my fate, and go down the road of health doom and disaster.

Martial Arts

What martial arts is very much depends on who your teacher is and their motivations for practising and teaching their art.  In martial arts there are countless schools, each one a subtle (or not so subtle) variation of the one that went before.  They are not all the same, and that is how it should be.  However, I believe they should all have central values.  Although is it thought by many that learning to fight and to defend oneself in a physical sense is the main focus of any martial art it is in fact a  by-product of martial arts.

Learning to fight is a product of the martial arts none- the- less, however the context of that learning is all important.  Learning martial arts will teach the person physical co-ordination, conditioning, technique, mobility, flexibility and agility, and it also teach mind discipline, focus and intent which are essential life skills.  Honour, integrity and etiquette should be all central and core values of all martial arts. As a teacher of martial arts I feel that a mutual desire to create an encouraging and nurturing learning environment is vital to students’ progress.

Martial arts can also provide the opportunity for self- expression and encourage the student to create works of art.  A good teacher tries to find new and exciting ways and things to teach students to develop their skill in life as well as martial arts. A good school develops the martial arts by creating new forms, new techniques and new concepts that are a product of its passion for the subject.

As a student of martial arts, there is the opportunity for new learning and pushing the boundaries of your own potential which your teacher is qualified to assist you with.  Martial arts are a vehicle for unlocking your own innate potential in all things, not just martial arts.

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing therapy. Rei means universal and Ki means energy in Japanese. It is a traditional method of energy healing that has been used for centauries but the understanding and practice became lost to modern man.  In recent times it has gained a revival. It was brought to the west by a Lady called Mrs Hawayo Takata who was a Japanese Hawaiian, just before the Second World War. Since that time Reiki has traversed the earth and is now used in many countries. Each country adds something to the practice of Reiki in the way it is performed and passed on. Reiki is passed on from master to student and not just taught in a traditional way, although there is traditional learning as well to master as a Reiki practitioner. The student of Reiki must master how to give a treatment both to them-selves and to others also they must master how to send Reiki energy over long distances to people who may need a treatment.  We all have a natural ability to heal. Reiki knowledge brings this ability to the fore for the student of Reiki. To be a Reiki practitioner the ability to connect to other people in a healing capacity on all levels of the person is cultivated, as Reiki itself heals the person on all levels. Reiki heals the practitioner as well as the patient. It heals on the mental, the physical, the spiritual and the emotional level of the person. Reiki can heal or support the healing of very serious illness. It does not harm in any way as subtle universal energy is part of the fabric of our being and so therefore can only be good for us. Reiki heals by flooding the body with universal energy and by doing this the body takes what it needs and replenishes the body to bring about healing of the physical body as well as the other bodies, emotional, mental, and spiritual, of the person. Reiki could be said to almost do it all. Reiki is a very effective healing therapy.

Which do you recommend for what kind of people?

Which you choose depends on you and where you are or what you wish for from your personal journey.   You are on your personal path and may choose what is right for yourself. People who wish to explore themselves and their own life and quality of life may wish to choose martial arts. People who are unwell and are looking for solutions to that ill health or people who wish to help others or loved ones manage their ill health or people who are looking to become therapy professionals may choose Reiki.

Your experience of martial arts will depend upon the teachers you choose, the values they hold and the method of their teaching.  Find people who are in line with your values.  You may also be surprised what martial arts offer.  It may well be that when you engage in either practice, Reiki or martial arts, they may shatter preconceived ideas that you may hold about either or both.  The key to your personal energy journey is to be open to new ideas and to try things and give them time to unfold.

 

What are the unique benefits of each?

Both Reiki and martial arts offer people mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health benefits. These benefits are not unique to Reiki and martial arts but are certainly very powerful.  Both martial arts and Reiki require mental focus to direct power and energy in certain ways.  Once we learn the skill we can be opened up to the natural benefits of these practices , such as better health, reduction in the rate and effects of aging, more vitality and productivity, more creativity not just in the artistic sense  but also relating to dealing with life’s problems, stresses and strains.

Martial arts can offer continued physical fitness, as well as an awareness of the body that leads to less injury.  Due to the high impact nature of martial arts, it can promote bone density which may reduce the effects of brittle bones later in life. The fact that martial arts demand a range of body movements may promote prolonged mobility and flexibility, as well as coordination, balance and overall body strength.

Reiki has many benefits.  Reiki is a quiet non-invasive therapy. It can be given hands off the body or hands on the body depending on what the person prefers.  It does not hurt and there are no pills, lotions or potions to take or apply. There are no needles as in acupuncture and only requires the person to lie on a couch and relax whilst the practitioner works. It is very effective and there has been some research done on Reiki that has found the effectiveness of Reiki with regard to many illnesses. It will help most illness to a greater or lesser extent. Reiki always helps, never harms and will work alongside any other form of treatment, giving that other treatment support and help to do its work. It will speed up results gained using other therapies.  It can be used alongside conventional medicine and will not interfere at all but will work in harmony with it. As the practitioner gives a Reiki treatment they too will obtain a treatment at the same time. Reiki helps with many of life’s difficulties as it brings about a calmer person and a person much more in tune with others. Reiki helps the practitioner strengthen their feeling of connection to all life and the universe.
