Three Schools of Thought

In my experience there are three schools of thought around the spiritual path. There are those that embrace it, those that disregard it and those that are undecided.  The people who embrace it feel comfortable communicating with electromagnetic energy and the spirit world.  Often they are people who have been able to do it all their lives.  Perhaps they embraced it at an early age.  There are many who try to ignore the communication when they are young and come back to it later in life.  There are others who make it a life- long denial.  Whichever camp they fall in, these people are very intuitive and sensitive to the energy of people and places around them.  Somehow their minds are wired to be sensitive to the electromagnetic energy of the world around them and they sense things that other people do not feel.  They are more tuned into their subconscious, left brain, the part that is sensitive to electromagnetic energy and the messages it conveys.  The more they use this innate skill, the more powerful these skills become.  At the opposite end of the spectrum are those that disregard it.  Often they are not sensitive to the electromagnetic energy of the world around them.  They are very right- brained, logic driven people who look for reason in all that they do.  Because they are not consciously sensitive to electromagnetic energy, to them the world of insights, intuition and spirit does not exist and so they dismiss it when people talk about it.  Then there is the range of people who are open- minded enough to consider the evidence available that points to the fact that electromagnetic energy communicates with us in the physical world all the time in the form of insights, intuition, signs and spirit interactions.  It is to these undecided people who are open to the idea of spirit, yet may be sceptical of it, that this blog is addressed.

A healthy scepticism

I fall into this latter category. I have been drawn to spirituality all my life.  Ever since my elder brother spoke to me when I was a young child of philosophy, spirituality and psychology, I have been fascinated by the power of the human mind and how we interact with the world around us.  I have been drawn to study many global religions, traditions and cultures as well as native traditions from America, Australia and Africa and found that they have a huge amount in common with the Islam, Judaism, Christianity (the Abrahamic religions), Hinduism, Taoism and Buddhism with regard to the structure of the universe and the nature of spirituality.  To me they say the same things in different ways and I fail to understand why they argue over what is fundamentally the same truth.  Religion is not the sole custodian of spiritual teaching.  In fact much of religion has no spiritual relevance at all.  Spirituality cannot be limited to any particular religion or teaching.  Even my beloved science, which I had carved a career in at Cambridge in Biochemistry and Neuroscience, talked about Quantum Physics and the parallels with spiritual teachings throughout the world.  All kinds of books such as The Tao of Physics, The Field, The Holographic Universe, Blackfoot Physics, The Dancing Wu Li Masters and our own Nourish the Flame Within discuss this science- spirituality connection.

Intellectual Spirituality

I have been exposed to an intellectual spirituality, as many people have in our modern world, with dashings of experience that tell me my intellect is pointing in the right direction. There is simply too much evidence as far as I am concerned for there not to be an electromagnetic and spirit world with which we interact and communicate.

Yet how can it be proved? This is where the intellect must take a leap of faith and build some trust.  It is precisely this fact that makes the open- minded person sceptical, suspicious that they will be taken for a ride, duped, have the wool pulled over their eyes and taken advantage of.  Indeed, the profession of spirituality is full of charlatans that prey on the needy and the hopeful.  This is not Spirituality.  Every profession is full of those with integrity and those that want to make a quick fortune at any cost.  Choose carefully.  Making a poor choice does not negate the electromagnetic, spirit world and the power and validity of intuition and insight.  It simply undermines your trust.  Finding good teachers will deepen your trust in something that you intuitively know to be true.  At least, this is the experience I have had.  We also have the throw- back to witch hunts and the fear Religion has instilled in its congregations that plague our consciousness as a society and inform our prejudice and scepticism.  All of these historic episodes influence our conscious acceptance of a spirit world.  There is mounting scientific evidence to support these notions that people throughout time have experienced.

The Limitations of a Conscious Mind

The conscious mind is a powerful tool, trained to think, analyse, consider and ponder endlessly, from the moment it wakes up to the second it falls asleep. No matter how hard you try to use it to connect to the higher vibrations of electromagnetic energy, it will not happen.  The subconscious mind holds the tools to connecting to these higher vibrations of electromagnetic energy.  It is your ability to consciously listen to the subconscious that requires cultivation.  To experience spirituality, you have to place the conscious mind aside and feel it through your subconscious senses.  Meditation, contemplation and prayer are three ways in which you can calm the conscious mind and develop the skill of listening to whatever the subconscious is picking up from the electromagnetic information all around you.  There are many other ways as well, including drumming, Reiki, dancing and movement, chanting and singing, sound and silence to name a few.

Which path should you take?

The path you are drawn to take- the kind of answer the conscious mind hates because it is too vague.  You can only truly answer it with your subconscious mind, through hunches, insights and intuitions that guide you through your life.  There are as many paths as there are people in the world, as each person takes an individual journey that brings them closer to the truth.  My journey is unlike any other person’s path.  We may walk with people for a while (teachers, mentors and guides).  Ultimately, it is each person’s responsibility to discover their journey, using the full power of the brain, both conscious and subconscious, as well as the intellect, intuition, intention and choice to find the way.

Tree of Life

Humanity is connected through a network that may be thought of as The Tree of Life

Humanity is connected through a network that may be thought of as The Tree of Life

Many spiritual traditions speak of the Tree of Life. For example, the Bible speaks of it in Eden, in Islam it is known as the Lode Tree and of course Buddha sat beneath the Bodhi Tree where he attained his great enlightenment. The tree is a powerful metaphor and archetype throughout spiritual teachings and I have wondered why that is for some time.

Recently, I had a meditation experience that may have answered the question for me. I never say that things are answered for sure, as certainty stops questioning and the potential for growth and learning. Yet it fits in so many ways and I feel strongly that it speaks of the truth.

I was practicing one of the spiritual connection meditations from our book, Nourish the Flame Within, specifically the third in the first series, Connection to the God Force. My experience was that I was a leaf on a tree and that if I allowed my awareness to remain restricted, I was only concerned with my own world and my limited perception. As I allowed my awareness to expand, I became aware of the leaves around me (perhaps a metaphor for family and friends?). Later, my awareness spread to the smaller branches and then the larger ones. It felt like I was connected to community and nation. Eventually, my attention spread to the trunk, the concept of Humanity. Fully aware, I could feel the flow of energy from leaf to trunk and back again, sensing my place and role in Humanity, nation, community and self. It was an amazing experience.

So, the Tree of Life, or the Tree of Humanity, shows that we are an inter- connected whole, each of us playing a significant role. Each one of us feeds the whole and is fed by the whole. Just as the leaf turns sunlight into food for the tree and the tree brings nutrients and water from the ground through the trunk and branches to the leaf, your very existence fuels humanity, while humanity gives you what you need to be your full and magnificent self. Actions of the individual affect all of humanity. This is how a tree works. This is how humanity works. Even though you may not know what good or harm you are doing spiritually, you are affecting things in a small and significant way.

Beyond that, the metaphor allows us to see how broadly the Tree of Humanity is inter- connected to the Universal Whole. Nothing exists in isolation. Water and nutrients in the soil are drawn up by the tree, while ultra violet light from the sun is used to create food in the leaf. Every cell of the entire tree benefits from this two- way relationship. Spiritually we are the same. We are nothing without the power from the earth and the sun. We are diminished versions of ourselves if we isolate ourselves from the Universal Energy of White Light. We are nothing without each other collectively.

Many spiritual teachings show us that an act of kindness is kind to all humanity and that an act of hatred and fear affects all humanity. I am beginning to understand this wisdom. It is easy to become disconnected again after the meditation. The truth is you are always connected, to humanity, the planet and the universe. The meditation is an invitation to become sensitive to this truth and carry it with you throughout your day, to inform all your actions, decisions and thoughts. So many of us seek peace in society and in our own hearts. Perhaps this is one of ways in which we can bring peace to ourselves and those around us. In time it will spread. For now, let us begin with a simple meditation, which starts with a simple breath and an invitation to connect to White Light.

Creativity and the Soul or Sub-conscious mind

Positive interaction and the growth of the human soul

Positive interaction and the growth of the human soul

Creativity
I consider myself to be a creative person. Creative activity and art gave me great pleasure as a child. I had an early encounter with art that had me hooked. As a babe in arms I was carried to the kitchen table by my mother and placed on it. She took a pen and paper and drew a cat for my amusement. My mother was no great artist and she drew the simplest of renderings. She had two circles placed one on top of the other. Two triangles for ears and dots for eyes and nose and a half circle for a mouth. Lines for whiskers, and a tail and that was it. I was amazed at that wonderful cat. I remember it so vividly to this day sixty one years later.

Inspiration
Often little things can inspire us. That day something was awakened inside of me. I know all children are awakened by many things. Our senses are awoken very early on in our development. This is a time of discovery of course and a time of wonder. New tastes, smells, touches and visual stimulation are all on offer on a daily basis at this time. From that first encounter with drawing I was hooked. I loved it. From that day on I would look at drawings and illustrations in books. Colour stimulated me as did design from an early age. That early encounter with drawing would be the starting point that would take me to Art College and many hours of my life spent in contemplation and learning of drawing, painting, design and art. So many hours of my life has been spent in this way. All of those hours that I have spent have been a joy to me. Some were painful, in fact very painful but as has often been said by many people, without pain there is no gain.
If my mother were alive today I don’t think she would agree that her humble efforts at drawing a cat had anything to do with taking me on my discovery of art. But it did. My mother encouraged my creativity. She always gave my sisters and me, the tools to be creative with. My mother encouraged drawing, colouring and sewing. In fact she was in favour of all creative activity.
Isn’t it strange how others can influence our behaviour and our path forward in life? Sometimes a chance conversation, a meeting with a person can make a huge difference to our life. Neither I nor my mother had notion of Art College and training when she drew the cat. What she wanted in that moment was to entertain her small child. But her efforts did much more than that. It awakened something deep inside of me. It stirred my soul.

Rules, stories and limiting beliefs
I have many clients who come to me for therapy who have beliefs of unworthiness. These beliefs often start in childhood. They are given deliberately, unconsciously or passively by individuals or society. They are all around us in the media, in the home in families, in education and in society as a whole. People are segregated one from the other on many differences. They may be social, financial, sexual, intellectual, visual, interact, or many more separating factors. We all take some of these separating factors on board to a degree. The roots of feelings of unworthiness can come from the family, school, peers, society the media and are always buried somewhere in the past experience of the individual. It will be from some form of interaction with someone or something that they will have been gained.
Even as quite a young child I understood that society had rules and a story worked out for my life path. I understood what was expected for my future and allowed for me. It is funny how we just absorb unspoken and spoken messages. I remember such sayings as know your place, respect your betters and elders. messages about our self are given to us from an early age. Each generation has their person expectations about what is on offer in life for them. I know my generation did not have it as badly as my parents and grandparents generation, after the war we all got richer and had more options open to us than our parents had in their youth. However limiting interaction was there although perhaps watered down. My mother told me stories of her childhood and how she was made to feel deliberately unworthy and stupid by her teacher at school. She was made to stand in a corner of the school room and called a dunce. my mother was not a dunce at all but that experience scared her on many levels. That was in the 1920’s. I know that today teachers take great pains to encourage their students to be people who aspire and feel worthy.
I have been watching a programme recently on T.V. It was about Victorian Britain and the harsh conditions that the Victorian poor had to endure. They did not have very many options. We all take so much for granted these days. They were kept in their place mainly by economic difference. People with money were considered better than people who were poor. The poor were often portrayed in a very negative light. They were seen as lazy and feckless and the masters of their own circumstances. The Victorian rich did not seem to grasp the fact that economic poverty was created by a lack of funds in the direction of the working classes. By keeping wages unreasonably low they kept these people in economic poverty as well as emotional poverty.

Self-belief
There are many ways to keep people in their place. We can do so by economic means we can do so by emotional constraints. Sometimes they are spoken other times unspoken. Language has great power. The way we use words and the words themselves have great power. Words convey information but they also convey much more. They have a vibrational power that can impact the very heart of the individual. Words are both information and vibration. Something as simple as “who do you think you are.” This sentence can be a put down of the person it is aimed at. Many of us will have had someone say that to us. I know I have and in recent years it has been said about me. Well my response to that question/statement was this: “I know I am Lynette, I am an artist, spiritual teacher, Reiki master, holistic therapist, wife mother and more importantly myself.” The sentence “who do you think you are” has a negative vibrational power, depending on how it is given to the person. If the person is not strong enough or wise enough to understand where the sentence is coming from in the person and their agenda it can be very damaging to the receiver of the sentence. That of course was the point of the sentence in the first place. It was meant to be damaging and destructive to the receiver.
I understood from a very early age that there was something very negative going on in society and some of it was directed at me. Although during my childhood I understood there were negative influences coming in my direction from society, my father gave my sisters and I a very different story of what we could and could not be. He tried to instil in us self-belief. It is not surprising how many people just don’t have it. In my work as a therapist I meet so many people who are left broken people because of limiting negative language that they received as children or young adults. Sometimes they receive it as adults at the hands of other adults such as work colleagues, parents, siblings, friends or spouses.
Great things can come from a place of self-belief. When self-belief is not nurtured or is attacked by others we shrivel and die inside. Our soul or sub-conscious mind is affected as it stores that story of limited self-belief, as our reality. Our soul/sub-conscious mind believes without question what we tell it. In that way we create our reality.
Giving someone a story about themselves to believe can create their reality if they take it on board and act it out. The same applies to oneself. We can also give ourselves a story to believe and act out. That is self-belief, if we give our self a positive story. If we give our self a negative story to act upon that is lack of self-belief.
Mantras are a great tool to help nurture self-belief. In a mantra we can give our self over and over again a positive statement that if give many times we will in time believe.

Art touched my soul
Art uses the intellectual, visual, auditory and emotional capacities of the person. The produce of art touches the soul of people. It does not matter what art it is, music, dance, theatre, drawing painting etc., it all touches us.
We touch our own soul first. We first touch our own soul in the creation of art. For in that touching we understand the soul of others. My mother stimulated my intellectual awareness, my visual and emotional awareness by drawing the cat. She also touched my soul. I knew what a cat was. The drawing gave me a paper representation that expressed the experience I had of cat. That touched my soul on some level. It still does.
My mother and I connected in the moment she drew the cat, and also beyond that time through that act. Of course my mother and I had many connections, both positive and negative, but none carried by me in the same way as the drawing of the cat.
We sometimes touch each other with simple things. Those simple things may pass without question or notice. However they can have great impact on the giver, receiver or both. The quality of our interactions with others is important as we all leave each other with something through those interactions.

Negative Careers Officer
When I was in my teens and still at school, I had to see the careers officer. My encounter with this woman was not good. She asked me what I wanted to do and I said go to art college. Her reply to that was we can’t all be doctors and dentists. She then gave me a list of very unsuitable alternatives to Art College. None of which gave me any hope of fulfilment. I am not sure why she thought I should not go to Art College as I always had talent at art and an aptitude for it. There was not a moment of encouragement from that woman. I am so pleased I did not listen to that woman for a moment. I remember coming out of that interview thinking, “rubbish.” I will not forget that awful woman till the day I die. My mother had awoken my love or art and this woman wanted to crush it.
As we can awaken talents and interests in each other so too we can quash them. For every person that awakens another’s soul there are those who would send it to sleep. Often this is done with the use of negative opinions and expressions. Fear is a big driver of this kind of behaviour.
• Fear of the other person.
• Fear of the other person developing self-power.
• Fear of the other person improving.
• Fear of being overshadowed.
• Fear if being left behind.
• Fear of being no longer equal.
• Fear of being considered less than.
• Fear of the person breaking out of their allotted place and story.
• Fear of not measuring up.

I don’t think the careers officer’s opinion of me came from a place of fear. Although I am not too sure what she was basing her opinion, I have a theory or two.

Nurturing
Nurturing, support and development of the human intellect, soul, spirit, and emotions take humanity forward. Crushing of those elements at best keeps people and society static. At worst it causes frustration, dissatisfaction ill health or worse. Many people who we consider geniuses came from unlikely backgrounds. Many defied society’s rules and stories for them to bring us all their personal brand of creativity, whatever that was. The human soul must be nurtured and not crushed. The human soul has a right to be free to express and be creative. All souls have a right to grow and a need to grow. All humanity benefits from positive human interaction and expression. I celebrate creative expression for it is the expression of the human soul.

Union

Spiritually, we are meant to be unified, we are meant to think and act with the whole in mind.

Spiritually, we are meant to be unified, we are meant to think and act with the whole in mind.

I wrote this minutes after finding out the result of the UK Referendum to remain in the European Union. The decision to leave has had wide- spread ramifications for Great Britain and the world already.  These outcomes will continue to unfold for months and years ahead, and I trust that the politicians, economists, financial houses, businesses and individuals will make the best of it, in that we will find a way forward that will be to the benefit of all sides.

I voted to remain. It was a spiritual decision.  Spiritually, we are meant to be unified, we are meant to think and act with the whole in mind.  Every spiritual path, be it within religion or not, teaches and demonstrates that we are part of an indivisible whole.  Science, with it’s theory of Big Bang, acknowledges that the entire universe came from a single point in space and time and that nothing new has been created since- the energy is just recycling.  This is the rhythm and cycle of existence.

In the UK, it seems that there is some concern with the challenges that come with European unification. Of course it is challenging to live in harmony with other people and nations that think differently, want different things and act in different ways.  This is part of the struggle of being human, to find a way to hear all that must be heard and respond in a way that all peoples feel respected, cherished and honoured.

While people only think short term and do not take the larger view, separation will always appear like the better option. It comes with its own challenges.  Separation and Union both bring their own difficulties.  Separation weakens the whole.  It is seeded in fear and I think we need to be more courageous than that, globally, nationally, regionally and individually.  Union requires a totally different mind- set.  To care for our brothers and sisters, to unite the energy that feeds and sustains us.  Once people feel cared for and heard, healed and empowered, that mind- set will have already taken a huge shift.  Until then, as individuals, we must do what we can to unify our lives, so that we can demonstrate the power of living in love.  This is the message of every spiritual leader: Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Ang Sang Su Shi.

I hope that whatever the UK and the world do from this point on, we will find a way to create greater union across all nations. I do not want to sound like some naïve new- ager.  I am not one, for I know that the road ahead will be challenging, not because it has to be, but because to change hearts and minds is hard when they are driven by fear and a sense of lack.  It will take a lot of internal work, that many of us are reluctant to do at the best of times, to shift towards love and abundance.  When we do, and the tide is changing in spite of what this vote may or may not imply, the healing and Union will pick up pace.

The Universe Influences

ThinkstockPhotos-177794827Mind body connection

There are many books on the market that talk about the mind and body connection or the mind and life connection. Books such as the Secret and authors such as Louise Hay have used and shared this mind- life, mind- body understanding. Hypnotherapy is a practice that centres on those connections and uses them for the benefit of the client’s health and well-being. The connection between mind and body and mind and life is very well understood by health and well-being professionals.

We also have a connection to the Universe. We are the Universe. We are not separate from the Universe. Every moment of every day we have a profound connection to the totality of the Universe. If you consider yourself separate from the Universe please answer this. Where did you come from? What made you? What are you made from?

You are energy

You are energy through and through. You are made of the stuff of the universal stars. You are no different to them. You have your place amongst them. They are energy and so too are you. The Universe came into being a long time ago and we can say it has a life of its own. It too lives and breathes as you do. Stars come and they go. The Universe experiments with energy on many levels, life forms come and go depending on how successful they are within the universal experiment. You are made of the stuff of the stars. The universe created you to live and breathe. It created you to live a life. Life can be challenging. Many things both good and bad happen within a life. People cross each other’s paths, sometimes those meetings and crossing are good and happy ones with fulfilling outcomes. Other times they are not so. If they are considered good or bad it will depend on the view points and agendas of those doing the analysis. Each person has free will and choice. Each person has a mind of their own. Each person has thought patterns and processes. These thought patterns and processes are unique to the individual. The individual ultimately gets to choose how they think. Their thought processes help them to make sense of the world and understand it to a degree.

Your life influence

It is not commonly understood by the general public that there is a mind connection with life itself. We think from the point of view that thinking and action will bring about a result.  It is true that thinking, decision and action will do that.  Results will be gained efficiently by using thinking decision and action and should not be underestimated as it plays an important role in taking the individual forward in a chosen direction. However what is not as easily understood by people in general is that they have another field of influence upon life. This is an energetic one. We can bring situations or people in our direction by our energetic connection to life and the Universe on all levels.

The Universe thinks and heals itself

The Universe is a thing. It lives, breaths and thinks. It has consciousness throughout. Human beings are also energy with consciousness. We too are energy that thinks. It is like two heart beats, the universal heart beat and the human heart beat. They can beat in synchronisation or out of synchronisation. So we can be conscious and energetically in tune with the Universe or out of tune with the Universe.

We all have influence on our lives, the lives of others and our thoughts and decisions through physical interaction, conscious thought and energy interaction and manipulation. There is an energy that permeates the Universe that influences everything. It is the catalyst that fires the Universe on all and every level. This energy is called Universal energy. It is known by many names and every culture has a name for it. It’s made up physically of a combination of electricity and magnetism. It is electromagnetic energy. It permeates all life on all levels. It is a carrier or information. It carries thoughts, ideas and beliefs around and throughout the Universe. It is a universal telegraph wire. It carries information everywhere. This background energy is known to science and they are calling it “The field”. Esoteric people and healers have called it Universal energy, Chi, Ki, Psychic, and Pranic energy amongst other names. It has been known to man for many thousands of years and the Chinese have understood its healing properties and how to exploit them for five thousand years.

Transferring Universal information

Everything you think and feel is carried into the world as energy. It is carried around the earth and out into the Universe on the back of Universal energy. Your thoughts are transferred through Universal energy to all parts of the Universe. We have all heard of the Aboriginal people of Australia and the fact that they have telepathic abilities. If what I have said holds water and it does, then this is a perfect explanation to those abilities.

You have both connection to and influence upon the Universe. You are part of the Universe and a part that makes up the totality of the Universe. Your thoughts and actions and deeds add to or take away from the Universe. You are important to the Universe. There is a responsibility to the Universe by you to it. Whether you consciously acknowledge that responsibility or not is your free will and choice.

Your Universal life

The Universe acknowledges you and the life it gave you. It will interact with you on many levels. It gave your life to you and in time it will take that life back. How you live that life is your free will and choice. If you interact with the Universe consciously, this is too your free will and choice. It is for you to understand that the choice is yours and you can exercise it at will. The Universe will respond to your thoughts and actions. Not with fire and lightening but with situations, people and circumstance to your ultimate benefit.

Benefit comes in many textures. Some rough and some smooth. What you may feel benefits you may not be the same thought and understanding to the Universe. However, it is not the point of living to give you a hard time to punish you. We are strengthened by being stretched. We always have the Universe’s ear when things are unbearable to us. Speaking your truth, thoughts, wants, needs and desires to the Universe is not seen as selfish but a necessary part of your right and growth. The Universe hears you. A word of caution here: please be careful of what you ask for. Harmful thoughts, deeds, and desires always have repercussions. We are all human and sometimes each of us may fall a little short. This is part of our learning and growth. To set our own boundaries of good and right is a good thing. To understand that our desires affect others is a good thing. To abuse our position in the world is a bad thing. Harm to others deliberately done is not acceptable to the Universe and should not be acceptable to you. Fairness and love is a good starting point in any situation. Selfishness, harshness and greed will not be seen well. You may have selfish and harmful desires in the short term as they may be part of your growth and growth to others. What feels bad to us we seldom engage in twice by choice. Basically what I am saying is this: we grow by experience and sometimes we do not get things correct. No one is perfect, we are perfecting ourselves daily. It also must be said that others feel our energy and thoughts by way of energy and if they feel bad, we will be seen in that light by those who engage with us.

Interacting with the Universe

We can ask the Universe for direct and positive input into our lives, health, and living situations. The Universe responds to those requests. We interact with the Universe every moment of the day and do so largely without conscious thought on the matter. If we give our interaction conscious thought and conscious interaction we have more of an influence upon outcomes.

We think things into being on either an energetic level or a physical level. For anything to come into being it must be preceded by a thought first. When I learnt how to design many decades ago one of the things that were drilled into me by the design process is the fact that change happens by my conscious thought. An idea comes into being by thought first then execution second. Along the way in the execution process the idea can be changed manipulated and honed. It is the same with the manipulation of energy. We have a thought or an idea and that is then communicated to the Universe and then the Universe responds by moving energy to bring it into being.

Whatever you want or wish for and even if it seems impossible; tell the Universe what it is. Ask the Universe to move situations in your direction to bring about the change that you desire. For your life to go in a certain direction you have to bring about the physical change or you have to ask the universe to do it for you. What the Universe will do will show you how to make the change by bringing people, ideas, or situations in your direction. Sometimes and more often than would be supposed it will just drop things in your lap. You can ask for many things from the Universe and material things are amongst those that can be asked for. They will not always be granted but if you don’t ask you probably will not get it unless you physically do it for yourself. The Universe makes the path to what you want and need easier and smoother for you.

Steering your life

You have a life that you can steer in this direction or that, according to your own desires. The Universe has a role in that life as it gave it to you. You are part of the Universe and it has a vested interest in you and your life. Day by day you live and grow and the Universe helps you to do that. It supplies the ingredients for life.

So what are your desires and wishes? Whatever they are as you think them whisper them to the universal forces and ask those forces for a direction toward them. The Universe points the way forward.

The Continuation of Life

ThinkstockPhotos-491813498

I am sure that many people will have had the usual round of New Year’s greetings at the stroke of midnight, seeing out the old year and welcoming in the New Year. Dubai saw the old year out with an unfortunate fire that spread through one of its tall hotels. Mercifully no one was seriously hurt. However the fire did put a slight dampener on the celebrations as they had to be little scaled down due to the unfortunate occurrence. The following day I am sure would have seen many people who were connected with the hotel and the incident either as employers, employees or residents, dealing with the devastation that the fire would have left. A great deal of loss of one sort or another would have followed such an incident.

We look to the New Year to bring us new and better things, emotionally, financially, physically, and health wise. In reality our life does not begin a new as the old year passes. Our life is a continuation of events, one event building upon another. Accidents such as fires are due to poor decision making. I do not know what caused the fire in Dubai. It was possibly an accident. Accidents happen all of the time, people take a wrong turn, make a wrong decision, may have been carless in an action, decided something without care, all of these things may bring about an accident.

Our choices and decisions fashion future outcomes. Lives are built one day at a time one decision or choice at a time. If you feel that 2015 was not a good year for you, then ask yourself what you did in 2015 to ensure that 2016 is that very good and prosperous year that you desire. Our life is not something that just happens to us. We create our lives one day at a time one decision at a time.  At the end of your life you will look back over those days that made your life and what you will see is a pattern. A thread that runs through your life. Whatever ill that you may feel has happened to you that you don’t like, you have the power to change it. A desire to change the pattern is the first step to change. The next step is action. Change can sometimes happen in an instant. However more often than not change is slow, but slow change is change and will take the person forward on a new path to their desire.

Everyone suffers painful events.

Everyone suffers painful events.

Everyone suffers painful events. Bad life experiences are not particular to you however you may feel. They are particular to everyone. Everyone suffers some pain in their life at some point in their life. Pain is a part of life as is joy also. Everyone has something of life’s mix. Each person will experience both pain and pleasure within their life. One experience must be balanced by the other. We are here to live and grow. We live to experience, and we are not here to have pleasure alone.  Struggle is at the heart of living, as is love, laughter and happiness also.  All conditions exist and all conditions go to make a life. A balanced life is a healthy mix of it all. I have no idea if 2016 will bring you the things that you desire and be a good one for you. Only you will know if your 2016 was a good one or not as you are the person who will get to experience it. Once it is done you will look back over 2016 and decide what you feel it was.

Many things will have touched your year. It may have been romantic love and the pain that can go with that. With each passing relationship we learn something about life and our self. If someone walks away don’t take it personally, you were not right for that person and neither were they right for you. It was just a miss match, but a valuable experience. Take stock and know that you were the best that you could be at this time. Annalise the situation and find the reason for the closure of the relationship. Did the relationship just come to a natural conclusion with no real fault on either side? There will be a lesson to be learnt so look for the lesson.

Finance always has its positives and negatives. We all need financial security. I have always found the remedy for lack of money is earn more spend less and save at least 10% of earnings. This seems such a simple philosophy. Life is rarely that simple as life always throws its twists and turns. However I have found that to be sound financial planning.

Greif comes to each of us given time. We all lose people as loss is a part of the condition of living. We live and then we die. Death will come to each of us given time. Everything dies. Everything passes in time. There is movement to life. Life moves. Life is energy and energy moves. There is a natural order in that. The death of the physical body is one thing but the soul of the person transcends life. I am a spirit medium and there is a real comfort in that knowledge for me. I know  many people  find comfort in that understanding.

When a family member passed two years ago she had not been gone two days and she came through to talk to me via a friend who is a medium also. My friend did not know my relative had died. It was quite a shock for us both as she invaded out telephone conversation. However it was also nice as being newly deceased was not going to stop her getting some things sorted before her funeral.

All conditions are a part of life.

All conditions are a part of life.

All conditions are a part of life. There is a thread that runs from one situation to another always. Examine the thread of your life and you will learn a lot about change.

I would like to wish all of our readers a very happy New Year and thank you all for supporting our blogs for the past few years. I hope you have enjoyed them, however  if not I hope that they have at least challenged you or stirred your thought in some way. 2016 will see the publishing of my New book “Feel the Power” and I hope that you should be inspired to buy it. Both David and I wish you a very Happy and peaceful New Year.

The Spiritual Message of Christmas

ThinkstockPhotos-497638140

Have you ever thought about the spiritual message of Christmas? Do you wonder what Christmas is about and that it might be about more than eating and drinking?

Christmas shares a number of common features with other festivals from other religions and cultures? Many religions and cultures have a common spiritual message contained within their festivals. Many festivals have similar practices the relevance of which have been lost over time to common understanding. Light is a common theme to many faiths and festivals. On a very practical note light can represent warmth and comfort against the harsh cold and darkness of long winter evenings.

Christmas also coincides with the winter solstice, December 21st, the point of transition at which the year draws to a close in the rhythmic cycle when nature sleeps and begins the slow awakening towards growth, warmth and summer.  Light is an important theme in the winter solstice as the transition of the seasons are being celebrated and witnessed. I believe there is a deep spiritual message contained in the concept of light that is not simply restricted to Christianity, but also to Judaism (Hanukkah), Hinduism (Diwali), Paganism (Winter Solstice) and other faiths and traditions across the world. Throughout Christian history, in an attempt to be embraced by many people, the church drew on parallels between non-Christian ideas and Christian concepts and made them their own. One example of this is Easter, where pagan ideas of the Easter bunny and Easter eggs have become as big a part of the celebration as the Christian message. It is my opinion that Christmas is no exception. The spiritual concept that so many people across the globe and throughout time have embraced during this time of year, of light being a beacon of hope and change amongst the darkness, the stale, materialistic and self- absorbed ways of old and entrenched traditions.  It is easy to get confused by dates and think that because these festivals do not fall on the same dates as each other and often do not fall on the same date each year according to the Christian calendar, that they are not related.  Reviewing these festivals and the messages of these festivals we can consider whether they might be spurring people towards similar spiritual developments and understandings?

The story of Hanukkah is the tale of the destruction of the Jewish temple by the Syrian King Antiochus and the miracle of the light that burned in the temple, representing the presence of God, while the Jews went about the task of making the temple holy again after Syrian occupation. This is a story of good over evil, of freedom over tyranny and of the light of hope and enlightenment over the darkness of ignorance and narrow- mindedness.

Jesus’ story is very similar in that Jesus was born in a time of Roman domination in The Holy Land during which the Jewish hierarchy was rigid in its interpretation of the Jewish Law. The star that led the Three Wise Kings to Jesus’ birth heralded a change for the state and the religion of the region.  Jesus himself became a beacon and light of hope for people who suffered under the tyranny of the Roman Empire and Jewish control.  Jesus marked a change towards love, forgiveness, compassion and tolerance and taught a different way to the status quo. Of course the star has great symbolic meaning to Christians. It led the way for the Kings and Jesus is the light that leads the way to God.

The story of Diwali has it that it is the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. In Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Kali (the goddess of creation and destruction).  Everyone forgets and forgives the wrongs done by others. There is an air of freedom, festivity and friendliness everywhere. This festival brings about unity.  It instils charity in the hearts of people.

According to the BBC website, Pagan traditions were born from ancient people’s life outdoors. “The seasons and weather played a very important part in their lives. Because of this many ancient people had a great reverence for, and even worshipped the sun. The Norsemen of Northern Europe saw the sun as a wheel that changed the seasons. It was from the word for this wheel, houl, that the word yule is thought to have come. At mid-winter the Norsemen lit bonfires, told stories and drank sweet ale.

The ancient Romans also held a festival to celebrate the rebirth of the year. Saturnalia ran for seven days from the 17th of December. It was a time when the ordinary rules were turned upside down. Men dressed as women and masters dressed as servants. The festival also involved decorating houses with greenery, lighting candles, holding processions and giving presents.

The Winter Solstice was celebrated in Britain long before the arrival of Christianity. The Druids (Celtic priests) would cut the mistletoe that grew on the oak tree and give it as a blessing. Oaks were seen as sacred and the winter fruit of the mistletoe was a symbol of life in the dark winter months. It was the Druids who began the tradition of the yule log. The Celts thought that the sun stood still for twelve days in the middle of winter and during this time a log was lit to conquer the darkness, banish evil spirits and bring luck for the coming year.”

There are many common themes of good and evil; light and dark; the light overcoming the darkness, destruction and creation; the emergence of the new order from the old order and rebirth. As with all spiritual messages and practice, these themes and ideas encourage us to look within to evaluate ourselves and how we are measuring up as beacons of light or dark. With respect to personal energy, this time of year is a time of contemplation and reflection. It is a time for each of us to look within and seek our own personal rebirth of new insight and understanding. I hope that this festive season leaves you renewed, having reached new perspectives that lead towards your growth and fulfilment in this New Year.

Energy

shutterstock_117680335

Some of our readers have told us that they do not understand the connection we are making in some of our blogs regarding energy. So we have decided to write a series on energy specifically to address this oversight.

In “Nourish the Flame Within”, our first book, we explain energy and how we are defining energy. Both David Brown and I understand that not all of our readers will have read our book. As a bit of transparent self-promotion, we would encourage you to buy a copy of Nourish the Flame Within, which will give you a strong picture of how energy relates to our work.

Both David’s thoughts and my own as well as those of science itself are continually developing and so we invite you to please read our up and coming blogs on the subject to fill you in.

As you may or may not be aware, I am not a scientist. I am an artist, a holistic therapist and a spirit medium. So my way of explaining this is not entirely scientific. It’s more general. So I am going to give you a sort of over view from my point of view.

David is going to write some more detailed and scientific- based blogs to fill you in on the whole subject and I am going to write from a more holistic/spiritual angle.

Before we start I will have to tell you that I can understand the confusion as this is a subject that stirs the emotions in many people and some people just don’t get it at all. I teach this subject from many angles. I teach people who wish to be spirit mediums and also holistic healers. Some come because they are confused or curious also. So I have to get this information across to them quite quickly so that they can go forward with their development and understanding.

I have developed my own way of doing that. A student of mine who is a trained engineer said to me recently that the most important lesson that I teach is the very first. In that lesson I say these words “Everything is energy “, to my students. That is indeed how I start. It is a very important fact to grasp. It is the first point to grasp. I have never had a lesson given to me that opens in that way.

So number 1: Everything is energy.

David Brown said to me that everything is not made of energy it is energy. This is what science tells us about the world and universe in which we live. We too are energy as we are part of everything. The reason that this is important is because everything is the same basic ingredient. Everything is just variations of it. When you are an energy healer this is a very useful piece of information. So too if you are an aspiring medium, it opens your understanding of the world.

Most people including myself in the past view the world as a solid experience. That is one of life’s illusions. Nothing is solid at all. The totality of the universe is energy too. It is everything, as far as we know. Although I suspect, as many scientists do too, there is more beyond our universe. There may even be many universes, and if there are, they too are energy. Yours thoughts are energy, what you say is energy, your body is energy, your actions are energy. Your home is energy. Your relationships are energy interactions. The kitchen sink is energy, so is what you eat, drink and sleep on. It is all energy.

Number 2: Energy interacts with energy.

The next important point to grasp is that energy interacts with energy. David will give you a lovely scientific explanation on this point. Every point in the universe interacts with every other point. That includes you. You are interacting with various aspects of the universe. You take vitamins from the sun and the sun is part of the universe. You take food and sustenance from the earth and you live on the earth and that too is part of the universe. You interact with other people and they too are part of the universe. This describes a very basic level of interaction that we have and everyone would indeed agree with me here. However there is a deeper and more profound level of interaction that we all have with the universe.

The Earth is part of the universe and is in no way separate from it. Because we are part of the universe albeit a small part of it, we have influence upon it as we interact with it. We are currently destroying our home the Earth. We are very efficient at that and if we complete that task something in the universe will change. Our influence upon the universe will be no more. We have influence on the earth. We too are living energy.

Science tells us that we are not the only universe and that there is a great possibility that there are others. Esoteric people have throughout time said that they communicate with another place. This other place is energy too (I would think). These parallel universes interact with our own universe, it would be reasonable to suppose. Once again we have energy interacting with energy.

Let’s step back from that possibility and stay on the earth for now. Human beings are energy and we know that science tells us so. Human beings interact with all life on the earth. They interact with plant, mineral and animal alike. We are dependent on each other and the rest of life on earth to maintain the living experience on the earth. There is an energy exchange happening. Human beings contribute to that energy exchange in many ways as we have already discussed. Our energy exchange is not the best at the present as it is sending other life out of balance. Our relationships with each other are an energy exchange. Even things we do with each other or to each other are an energy exchange, good or bad. Everything is energy.

Number 3: All energy changes.

You change and the earth changes and so too the universe as a totality changes also. We add to that change of the universe. We are having both an interaction with the universe and an exchange of energy. Our thoughts go out into the universe as our energy. Now what is a thought worth?

494779951

Well think of something loving, and then think of something nasty. There is your answer: Positive and negative. Both will have an influence on you. The positive will be light and uplifting and the negative will be heavy and draining. Your thoughts are an energy interaction both with yourself and the wider world. Your thoughts have impact on your body and emotions. Your emotions will have an influence on the emotions of others as do your thoughts.

Number 4: Energy Vibrations are all around us.

Sound has been used as a powerful and effective tool for helping to improve health and well- being for thousands of years.

Sound has been used as a powerful and effective tool for helping to improve health and well- being for thousands of years.

Thoughts are vibrations, as is speech, light and colour. Colour is an aspect of light. We see light as colour and are affected by it, emotionally, physically and mentally. Sound affects us too. It affects us on a vibrational level both emotionally and physically. Every atom in our body is vibrating and each of us both individually and collectively is sending out a vibration. On an individual level we send out a personal vibration that belongs to us, it is “us”. There is a base to that vibration that solely belongs to the individual. However that base is ever changing and being influenced by everything that the person thinks does and says.

We are vibrating and so therefore are a vibration ourselves.

Number 5: There are many layers of energy.

There are many layers of energy within the universe, the earth and us. The interactions that we have with these layers of energy are not always apparent to our conscious thought. A great deal happens on a moment to moment basis that we are not consciously aware of. We cannot take account of every piece of information that comes in our direction and process it consciously as we would never go forward and get through our day. Most of the information that is available to us for our living experience is in the background of our life. We do not need to analyse it or think about it to live and go forward, so we don’t. There are processes within us and outside of us that we are interacting with and which interact with us. We do not either consciously know it or need to know it. However they are there and are therefore part of us, our life and living experience.

I teach people how to feel the energy around them on a conscious level. I teach them to feel the many layers of energy that exists around them. Until we look in the direction of these energy layers we don’t necessarily notice there existence. They are in the back ground of life.

There is earth energy, celestial energy and other energy layers that will tap into us whether we wish for it or not. Some of these energy layers are balancing to us and some are draining to us.

Our world137876360 (1)

There is so much in our world that we do not look closely at or question a little more deeply. These five points build the tapestry that is the complex and wonderful experience of life and the universe. To understand them is to develop a deeper appreciation of the workings of nature and the universe and our place in it, as well as our effect on nature and the myriad ways in which nature influences us. Often we dismiss much as irrelevant to our lives and well-being. Sometimes it is those things that are affecting us positively or negatively that we dismiss as irrelevant. How can they be so?

If we look a little more closely at that which is around us and which may seem ordinary, we may find the extraordinary!

What are martial arts really about?

Martial Arts is about the power of the mind, body and spirit

Martial Arts is about the power of the mind, body and spirit

What is your impression of martial arts and martial artists? In your mind are they tough fighters? Do you think of MAA (mixed martial arts) competitions, violence and aggression? Are martial artists thugs in your opinion?

Would you shy away from martial arts because of this perspective? Would you be drawn to something that sounded more spiritual, graceful and elegant? Would you consider martial arts if it was more artistic, about self expression and personal development?

If so, then please read on. This blog is designed to dispel some myths about martial arts in general and to high light some of the central and fundamental precepts behind martial arts.

And if you still like the idea of the aggression and competition of martial arts then I invite to read on too. You may not always enjoy this aspect of martial arts, nor may you be aware of its awesome power and potential which opens to you when you train with a different perspective and understanding.

The Great Masters have always been men of Peace

Bruce Lee, Morihei Ueshiba, Myomoto Musashi and Master Tesshu were all violent men in their youth. It was only when they contemplated their mortality that they realised the futility of violence and they began the quest for greater and deeper understanding of The Way or The Tao. Nelson Mandela was essentially a terrorist as a young man and Gandhi used to beat his wife and children before fear and hatred gave way to love and compassion.

Martial arts can show the way to compassion and love if we choose to use the body and mind to explore the connection to self and others and the world at large. It is the cultivation of the spirit, or intuitive energy of our being, that brings this connection and the peace that comes with it. Not all martial arts styles teach this way of peace. I believe it was always the true way it was taught in the past. In the modern world some have discarded these principles in favour of the physical aspects only. In my experience a person needs the mind, body and spirit to be healthy and strong and able to work together to mutually enhance the life experience so a person can live a meaningful and fulfilling existence.

Martial arts is unique I think in offering the potential to cultivate all three aspects of the being. It is not an easy path, yet it offers the chance for true freedom, creativity and self expression, keeping the energy flowing on many levels of the being and creating the opportunity to find real peace.

This is why I have continued martial arts for over a quarter of a century. It was not why I started. It is why I stayed and why I continue to teach-so that others may find their own path to peace and harmony.

Over to you

What is your experience of martial arts? Has it changed with time? Has it changed with teacher or style? What has martial arts taught you about peace and connection….. and about violence? We’d love to hear from you and enter further into this wonderful subject of energy, peace and connection.

Frankenstein’s Monster Brought to Life.

ThinkstockPhotos-164397880

Frankenstein’s Monster had no soul.

Many of us have heard of the Novel by Mary shelly, called Frankenstein. The story is of a Scientist who is obsessed with bringing the dead back to life and experimented with bringing a corpse back to life by giving doses of electricity. It is said that this idea was based on a real doctor who was obsessed with the idea of reanimation of life. He is said to have done experiments on dead bodies as Frankenstein did. This idea of re animation of the dead has persisted for a very long time. Even Egyptian mythology talks of reanimation of the dead. The story of Seth and Osiris is one of murder and reanimation of life. Osiris, King of Egypt, was killed by his brother Seth, who takes the throne and is later brought back to life by his wife Isis.Mary Wollstonecraft- Godwin, later Shelly, (1797-1851), as a young woman of sixteen ran off to Europe with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelly in 1816 and they spent the summer with Lord Byron and his personal physician Dr John Polidory. To pass the time during the summer they told ghost stories to each other. It was during this time that Lord Byron suggested that they all write a ghost story of their own. When Mary was eighteen she completed the assignment and was the only one to do so. The story Frankenstein has been hailed as a masterpiece and a work of genius and one of the first science fiction novels. It has been said that Mary Shelly based the idea on a scientist that lived at that time called Dr Victor Frankenstein.

I have not read the book but only know the story by films. However, the basis of the story is that a mad scientist wants to create life. Nothing new or surprising there I think. This scientist decided to use dead body parts and sews them together and tries to animate the patch work corpse with electricity. He succeeds in making a living monster that goes on to all kinds of mischief scaring people. The real Dr Frankenstein also did experiments with electricity and body parts in the hope of animating them.

If we put electricity into a corpse it does not come back to life. The line of thinking that acknowledges electricity as a catalyst for life, and that the human life is the body of the person assumes a great deal. The assumption is that there is nothing else but the physical body and that is the person.

As a holistic therapist my understanding is that the body does need electricity to function, as it needs many other things also. It needs electricity and magnetism in combination to facilitate life and health. Holistic therapy gives great store to electromagnetic energy within the body and its correct functioning through the body. Holistic therapy believes electromagnetic energy is of great importance to the well-being of life. So it may be reasonable to suppose that if we introduce both elements to a corpse we might restore life. Holistic therapy believes that electromagnetic energy feeds the body cells and without it the breaking down process of the body begins. At death with the cessation of blood flow there is cessation of electro-magnetic energy also. I cannot say if one is connected to the other directly but there may well be some sort of interplay with both.

I do not know if anyone has tried to reanimate a corpse with the combination of electrical energy and magnetism combined or not. I feel this must have been tried by someone. If so if it had worked we would all know about it. So it is reasonable to suppose it does not. So if electricity does not reanimate the dead body and electro-magnetic energy will not either then what will?

I think that the answer is nothing will. I think there is nothing that exists on the earth that will reanimate the dead body into life. I think this is because the body is not life itself. It is a part of the story and not the whole story. Holistic therapy treats the whole person. What is the whole person? The whole person is considered to be a combination of the physical body, the mental capacity of the person, the emotional capacity of the person, the energetic layer of the person and the most important one of all, the soul of the person. We see the physical body with our eyes and we know it is there. We don’t see the other parts of the person as a solid mass that is visible to the eye. Holistic therapy sees the person in layers and each layer goes to make the whole. Much like if we look at the physical body it is made of separate elements that make the whole. So too the whole person has separate layers or elements.

Shortly after the death of the physical body, the soul leaves the body. Many medics, mortuary attendants and those involved in the preparation of the dead body for burial will tell you, if pressed, that they sometimes see this leave the body. It has traditionally been the practise of many Nurses and people in general to leave a window open after death to allow the free passage of the soul out of the building. This is an old practise that is still observed by many even today.

Without the soul there is not life, because the soul is life. It is the most important part of the living life form. Life is the soul of the living thing. Life is not the body of the living thing as the body is the vessel by which the living thing is housed for the purpose of living in this existence on the earth.

If there is an attempt to reanimate the body without the soul present it is my belief that it will not be possible. The reason is because we are missing the life itself. We have the vessel but not the person or the life present. The soul has moved out of the body and moved on. We know that when a person dies on the operating table they can be seemingly dead for some time and life can be brought back to their body often without ill effect as long as it is done in a timely manner. At the passing of life the body begins the breaking down process. When the heart stops pumping the body starts the process of deterioration. The electro-magnetic energy also stops entering and traveling around the body another factor leading to the deterioration of the physical body. This part takes time as the cells are said to harden slightly as electro- magnetic energy ceases.

So for a brief time conditions still exist for the physical body to live successfully if animation is swift. Maybe when a person is reanimated after death on an operating table or such like it is because the soul is still present and has not yet moved out of the physical body. All of the correct conditions still exist for a brief time. The soul is still present. The heart has only just stopped and at this time the brain is still intact and not yet damaged by lack of oxygen .The electro- magnetic energy system has just stopped with the cessation of the heart pumping and the breakdown of the body has not yet begun in earnest. So we can revive the person by electrical stimulation and all should be well. So in these optimal conditions it is possible to reanimate the body and life itself.

So if my thoughts on the matter have any credence, Dr Frankenstein’s experiments were always doomed to failure. He made his job impossible. He took body parts and he should have taken a whole and undamaged body to start with and tried the application of electricity to the heart as immediately after death as was possible. He also should have understood that the soul must be present and that sometimes it moves on out of the body and that is as it should be. Life is more than the physical body.
