Modern Man

506976185Modern Man

Life is just great. What a great time to be living in. When I was a child I would think to myself that I was so pleased that I was born at the time that I was. We have cars and aeroplanes; we have electricity and machines to help us. We have plenty of food and nice clothes. We have hot running water and bathes. I thought that modern life in the 50’s Great Britain was just that, great. I was especially happy that I was not a child of the Victorian times who would have worked in a factory or in a field. I had the privilege of going to school and being educated and at the weekends spending time with my sisters and parents. Times change and expectations change.

Standards

By today’s standards we did not really have that much in the days of my youth. Even though aeroplanes existed I had never been on one. I did not know anyone personally that had in those days. My parents had never been on one and no one I knew had either. The first person that I personally knew that did go on one was a friend at school when we were about 12 and she went to Spain for a two week package tour.

If I think back to the time that I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s and how life for me existed then and how it is now, I can see how things have changed. I am sure my mother and grandmother would have said the same throughout their lives. My grandmother was born in 1902 I think and my mother was born in 1927. Both women saw a lot of economic and social change in their time. My grandmother would have seen the birth of the aeroplanes and electricity in the home, electrical appliances, radio, TV, telephones and much more. She saw two world wars and women’s role in society change from one of subservience to men to fighting for equality alongside the men at work and in the home.

Expectations

Life changes as does our expectations along with the passing of time. Modern man loves his machines. There are so many now that we all simply must have. The one I write this on is one of my favourites my little lap top that is so compact and light. I use it to keep in touch with the world. I communicate with friends across the globe.

I write blogs, books and emails on it and I just do not know where I would be without it. If it were taken away from me how would I survive? I recently purchased a tablet and in fact I have two. I have a kindle tablet and a cheap tablet also. I did not purchase an expensive one as I was not sure how the thing would fit into my life. To be honest it has not. My kindle I just use for reading and downloading books. As for the ability to use the net on it, I just don’t.  Am I missing something I wonder some times? I see other people glued to their smart phones and tablets and I just have no use for either. We are all different even in our use of technology. Technology is a good thing.  It brings us a great deal of ease.  I have to admit that sometimes I wonder at what cost and if we don’t pay too much for the price of a gadget.

Choice

We all work harder than we have ever done in modern times. Many of us push ourselves to limits that the mind and body were not designed for. Human beings are quite robust and we don’t break easily. I do see many miserable faces out there in life these days. Not everyone has a smile on their faces. Technology is meant to enhance life and make it better than it has ever been. There are so many people striving for a dream. Each person has their own dream. They each have their own idea of what makes the perfect life. Some dream of owning a Lamborghini and others dream of the latest most expensive handbag whilst others dream of the dream career or job or home. The perfect life dream is something different to each person. We are all individual.

Our life is full of choice and courses. We can choose one thing over the other. We all have collective choice and individual choice. Why do we the individual choose one thing over another? For the most part we choose what will benefit us the most. Benefits come in many shapes and sizes. There are as many benefits to be had as there are choices to make. The beautiful red shoes feed and satisfy the emotions whist the dream job sustains a family and their wellbeing.  Choice seems to bring its own problems. Modern man does have choice but at what cost to his life? If we visit any corner of the industrialised west an array of goods line shop shelves in every area of society. How much does each individual need to own to satisfy their desire for choice and abundance? Each person has a desire for abundance as abundance offers security of life in some respects.

Blight

Is modern man happy? Does our way of life sustain us? We are told that in the west we are overweight and eating poorly. We are told that we are blighted by heart disease and cancer. Why is this? We eat too much of the wrong things in the West and we sit too much and do not move our bodies enough. We drive our cars too much and do not use our legs enough. What is the answer? I just don’t know. Do you?

Biblical Rain and Misery

Rain and Floods

The ancient peoples of the earth understood and thing or two about life. They understood that they were a part of a greater whole. Recently in Britain we have had nothing but rain. Of course Britain is known for its rain. It has always been a standing joke both inside and outside of Britain. “The Rain”.

The message has always been if you are come to Britain bring your umbrella with you. In fact I stayed in a hotel once in Wales that gave complementary umbrellas to the guests as a way of enticing them into the hotel on weekend packages. Well that free umbrella has long gone but it was useful along the way.

Misery
The misery that floods incur is not to be underestimated. I live about 12ft or so from the edge of a river. I could not be much nearer. When my river rose during the recent rain we stepped outside one morning to find water over spilling onto the bank and heading in our direction. My neighbours and I were not happy. Luckily for us all it did not do more than that. All of the housed were safe. However, not so for so many people in Britain as devastation has travelled across the United Kingdom and the West Country has been very badly affected indeed.
Some people in Britain have been hit by flooding year after year in recent times. I watched people on the news give their thoughts and feelings to the interviewers about their plight with the rain, floods and devastation that has gripped their lives. It has been called floods of Biblical proportions. I can hear the wind picking up and threatening more rain as I write this.

Rain of Biblical Proportions and God’s Displeasure
Religious books are full of stories that tell us what happens to insignificant man should he step out of line and incur god’s displeasure, or even just the earth’s. Have we brought this in some way on our own shoulders? I have watched the weather patterns seemingly change over the years. Now I am no expert on these thing and the experts themselves seem not to be entirely in agreement. Some say global warming and some say not.

The Debate Goes on
The debate goes on with not real conclusion amongst any of us. May be we all have too much of a vested interest in keeping things as they are so we ignore the signs of erosion of the earth’s balance. We all talk in terms of our newest gadget or fashion item or what we simply must own next. At what cost to us all perhaps? We also talk about the endangered species of the earth due to our own expansion and greed. Maybe what we should all be worrying about is another species. Not the tiger or the elephant, although I fully support them both and their miserable plight. Maybe there is a more important cause to worry about, an animal that needs our help more. Ourselves! Perhaps we too are an endangered species. Not by numbers but by our own stupidity and actions.

The Language of Truth

Many paths lead to the Summit of Truth

Many paths lead to the Summit of Truth

Have you noticed how hard it can be to understand the language of certain disciplines?  Science is full of technical terms and complex terminology that can be impossible to grasp.  Different religions use words and ideas that are often incomprehensible to outsiders, while philosophers discuss concepts and make distinctions about things that are almost impossible to distinguish without years of study and contemplation.

It’s funny how words used to convey thoughts create barriers to understanding.

Camps become polarised and separated by ideologies that can create aggressive opposition by others that feel threatened and ostracised.

If you cut through the barriers of words however, you might just find that they are all reaching for the same truth- coming to the summit of the mountain as it were from different sides.  They all seek the truth- if you understand that many of the words mean the same things you no longer see the differences that cloud the truth but begin to see the mystery that is the truth.

Each path to the mountain top starts at the base.  If you are there, the top seems so far away and other paths of differing views seem so separate from yours.  As you reach closer to the truth you become more intimate with other paths, converging and merging as the truth comes more clearly into view.  If you reach out to others, you may find you reach the summit sooner and with more friends to share the experience.

I am trained as a scientist but it was only when I began to study religions and philosophies and expand my general scientific knowledge that I began to realise that they all study the nature of reality and the wonder of Nature itself.

Meditation is very similar to authentic prayer.  The eastern concept of karma (the science of cause and effect) can be seen in science, psychology, history, geography, sociology and anthropology.  The power of core values in life coaching is termed Kidi in Japanese Zen.  Biology, Chemistry and physics describe scientifically how inter- connected all things are as they are experienced by deep meditation.  Modern western medicine complements eastern ancient arts of acupuncture, herbs, Ayurveda and energy healing.  What world religions call God, One, the Word the Yogis call Om, the Taoists and Buddhists the Void, the Hindus Brahman and the American Indians the Great Spirit.  Quantum Physics describes the same reality that Buddhists and Taoists have discussed for centuries.

In short, all the schools of thought are searching for the truth.  Let’s work together and help each other to discover this One Reality.  Let’s focus on what binds us rather than what divides us and in so doing we will find the answers sooner.  Nourish the Flame Within is our attempt to distil these ideas into a single experiential guide – a chance to discover the truth through many possible paths- each of which leads to the Summit of Truth.

A Journey into Consciousness

494207351

Where does your attention lie? Where do you focus your awareness?  Where do you direct the energy of your mind? Three questions posing a similar line of enquiry….. Wherever we place our focus determines our reality.  If we are attentive to thoughts of fear, doubt or jealousy our reality becomes contracted. If we think of love, compassion and peace our reality becomes expansive. The more our thoughts expand our awareness the more connected we become to life and its magic and wonder. My early life was consumed by fear and I am striving to fill my latter years with love and joy.

I was born to my parents at a time when their relationship was on the rocks. It has been said in the family that having me was an attempt to bring them closer together again.  Needless to say I had no such power. They separated when I was about a year old and my parents both retreated into themselves to lick their wounds and find ways to move on.  They did the best they knew how and I am grateful for that- but without words, for I was too young to understand them, their actions and thoughts taught me lessons that I would take into later life that made it difficult to trust and share, say truly how I feel and have the strength to authentically express myself and stand up for what I believed in and wanted for my life.  I felt truly alone in the world.  I learnt that loneliness was preferable as it helped me avoid pain.

When Yoda appeared in the Star Wars movies in the 1970s, I knew I had to meet a person like that- a mentor, teacher and spiritual guide.  I met such a man in my late teens who showed me a different way- that we have to open up to life and in doing so life’s gifts and magic enter us.  We close down to avoid pain, but when we close down, we close down to everything.  We cannot be selective.  If we are open, we are open to life’s joy and pain- we just have to be strong enough to deal with both, be open to both and learn from both.  It is hard, but it is by far the most fulfilling path.  We see the best of our self and of others and only very occasionally do we see the worst.

If we trust, we open our self to life and begin to live life fully in spite of our imperfections and the imperfections of others. We remove the barriers that we try to put in place to hide our self for fear of exposure, unburdening our self and becoming freer. We are all imperfect and that is as it should be. It gives us a reason to grow.  The sooner we accept this truth, the sooner we can go about living fully and removing the barriers we have put in place that mask us from a spiritual connection to life itself.

This spiritual connection is a link with the Consciousness of the universe, what the Chinese refer to as Tao or Chi, the Indians call Prana or Brahman and what world religions call God. In Nourish the Flame Within we discuss the idea that all things are energy whose source is this Consciousness, simply vibrating at different frequencies, which manifests in different forms, from gases to solids, from hot to cold, from inanimate to animate.

Different thoughts also vibrate at different frequencies. In her incredible workshops, Love and Above, Christie Marie Sheldon discusses how thoughts of fear and worry have low vibrations while thoughts of love and compassion have high vibrations. Consciousness is the highest vibration and it is our source. Spiritually, we are trying to return to this source in a vibrational sense. In other words, if we can cultivate thoughts of love, compassion and sharing, we begin to change vibrationally. If we can shift our thinking away from fear and contraction towards love and expansion, we are moving towards a vibration of perfection or Consciousness. The health, relationship and spiritual implications of this are nothing short of astounding.

As we develop through life, make stronger our connections with life itself, cultivate relationships with people, animals and places, harness our passions and put into practice the things that truly make us tick, we walk the path of our spiritual growth and increase our vibration. The closer to Consciousness we get the more at peace we feel, the more connected and related we are and the more empowered we become. We become aware that we are living Consciousness.
