As I am writing and researching my new book Back to our Future, I am becoming aware that nature is Process driven. By which I mean there is a flow of energy along a highway or path that I would call The Process. These invisible highways lead to the potential outcomes of life, the “What if’s” that only become actualities and “What are’s” if enough energy is sent through The Process. Until then, they are pipe dreams and fantasies, which is how all great things start.
We tend to think of these in the human context as thoughts, ideas that spring to mind. This is the first creative Process as Neale Donald Walsh shares in Conversations with God. The second creative Process is word and finally action. Right Action is so important in life an entire chapter of the Bhagavad Gita is devoted to it as part of its spiritual guidance. It is also part of Buddha’s Eight- fold path. Energy must flow into action for things to be created in the material world. Yes, their foundation is in energy, in thought, yet there is a balance point around which existence shifts that makes this Process work in two directions.
Energy does not flow in one direction. It flows in two. There is a balance point around which the energy flows. If the energy is flowing in one direction, thought becomes action and things come into being. Flow the other way and things can no longer be sustained in that manner and they break apart. You can see this with old abandoned buildings. I have driven past a property over the last twenty years or so that I have seen built up from the ground, lived in and cared for and then abandoned. Now the roof and walls are breaking apart and soon there will be nothing left of it- The Process of energy flowing to create something and then flowing back the other way in action.
This balance manifests itself through the power of opposites. For there to be a right there must be a left. For an up there has to be a down. The Chinese refer to this as Yin and Yang and Taoist writings infer that this Yin and Yang was created from the Void, the Absolute, the Whole. Without opposites energy cannot flow, for it has no impetus to flow. Wind blows as a product of air moving down a pressure gradient from high to low. Water cascades down a river from a higher altitude to a lower altitude. Energy moves from order towards disorder unless effort is put in to prevent this. So balance is a point around which everything pivots, it is not a state of being. If it were, there would be no movement. Balance as a state of being would be stagnation. Imbalance is required if you are to move forward in any area of life. Even walking is a perpetual unbalancing process by which you continually regain balance before you stumble and fall.
In life, you are looking to keep things out of balance so that you can move things forward. You do not want them to be so far out of balance that you cannot recover from it. You see this a lot with over- work, too much food, drugs, alcohol etc. Learn to push your self off- balance enough to move forward, to step out of your comfort zone, to be on the edge enough to feel the adrenaline of life so that you learn, grow and develop. With that skill, you learn to trust The Process that is taking place in the background. You are learning to harness that life potential and see where and how it unfolds. You would go nowhere and do nothing without imbalance and the impetus to move, grow and learn, so get out there and learn to trust life and The Process that drives it all.
